Default 2002 S40 2.0 woes

Help, my petrol S40 is having a dicky fit, I was going along on the M1 when all of a sudden the engine started racing at 5000 revs and temp gauge went to hot. I switched off and cruised into services. I checked the throttle cable it was not sticking and fluid levels were ok. I set off again and it seemed ok.
Did exactly same journey today and it happened again same symptoms at the same place.
Has anyone got any ideas please?
Cheers Stephen

First step would probably be to check wiring to coolant temp sender, which is mounted into the thermostat housing. If wiring and plug is OK, it might be worth just replacing it. The part isn't too expensive and can cause such issues. Did any engine management light log when the fault occured?

Did the revs actually rise to 5k or did the needle just rise? As 5000rpm in 5th is 100+mph. Slipping clutch? Uphill motorway section?

IMO, there are only 3 possible causes for this

Forget the sensors. Sensors dont fail in specific places. I expect one of the following

At a certain point the temperature of the car causes a short circuit which affects several dials on the instrument binnacle - possibly caused by the warm lower radiator hose spraying fluid onto a corroded wiring loom, but there are several possible routes for temperature to affect a circuit.

If this is the case it'll always happen after a certain length of drive.

At a certain geographical spot a strong radio signal causes the car computer to malfunction. If this is the case you'd get the same symptom whichever way you were driving, at the same spot.

On a certain hill at a certain speed the clutch loses grip. in which case it'd only happen one way
