Default Instrument lights go bright all of a sudden, V40 D2

My 2013 V40 D2 instrument lights have started to go to full illumination during driving and will not dim using the small wheel to the right of the steering wheel. When I set off the dimmer works ok but sometimes during the journey they go bright, anybody else have this happen to them?

This sounds like the Volvo being helpful and adjusting the brightness of the dashboard illumination between daylight and night time conditions.

I don't think you can disable this.

Edit: On re-reading your post (more carefully!), if you can't always adjust the brightness it might be that the dimmer control is faulty.

Thanks, sorted now, it is just a shock going from dimmed to full on. This is the first winter I have had the car.
Thank you all for your help.
