Please create your own thread, this seems to be completely irrelevant to my issue.

For your reference though, my car got an advisory in 2018 for undertray being fitted. This is a very common advisory when an MOT tester wants to cover themselves, just in case there's something which they haven't seen because it was obscured by the undertray.

My car's undertray is now missing which just caused me to speculate that a previous owner may have removed it at some point after receiving the MOT advisory. I would not suggest doing this, if you get that advisory, it's really nothing at all and you may as well ignore it.

(At least that's always been my perception of this.)

With my optimistic hat on you have air in the system and it needs bleeding.
Was any work done on the system recently? Air would only tend to get in if the system was opened or there is a leak.
Thanks.

I don't know to be honest; the history is incomplete and weirdly it's the newer history that is missing.

I've had the car a fortnight and the pedal's been soft all that time but perfectly usable once in motion (my view only changed when I got the DIM warning, saw the mess on the ground and started this whole fluid debacle).

Anyway, car's now booked in to my local Volvo specialist for next Monday, so it's going to be over to them at this point. I'll let you know what the verdict is, optimistic me is hoping it will just be bleed the system... and I've even got a litre of TYP200 in the boot ready for them

I know it's a relatively simple job but I've never done it before and don't want to make a mess of it; as the car needs much more work doing anyway, as detailed in my other posts, I'm happiest just to add it to the list and let them get to the root of the problem. Reported fault simply as "brakes feel soft but gain pressure when pumped" for now so they can start from the beginning without all my misdiagnosis!

Well to put an end to this spectacular thread of misdiagnosis, red herrings and overthinking (by me)...

Took her into the local Volvo specialist this morning, got the call this afternoon... bled the brakes and problem solved.

Advised that brakes are in good condition all around (previous owner had mentioned they were done recently) but there was quite a bit of air in the system.

I'd come to that conclusion myself over the past few days, driving on some short, careful trips - pedal was soft on first press but with pulse braking it would quickly firm up and give a very sharp action by the fourth or fifth pulse. No sign of the pedal sinking or the brakes misbehaving in any other way so I had another U-turn in opinion and went in with an optimistic mindset this morning. Not observed any fluid loss anyway!

Apparently I also have a working handbrake now, and that all it required was adjustment... shoes said to be in good condition but the cable was hopelessly misadjusted. (I was having to pull it all the way up, and sometimes tug even further, to get anything from it.)

Car's now staying to have the rest of the work done but I'm now much happier and it now seems once again that my inner sense saying "there's faults but it's a bargain" was correct.

Everyday is a schoolday as they say.....
Common faults occur commonly and more often than not the simplest explanation is the right one.
Good Luck with it, many happy miles and safe arrivals.

Thanks Brendan, not really all done yet though after all; as detailed in my other thread, very quickly after getting the car back, I decided I'm still not happy... https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=306974

Going back in on Friday, my quest for satisfactory brakes continues.
