So basically, the 205bhp engine is a new design in comparison to the older models (As I said previously).

That’s the same as saying a pre facelift P3 V70 is a different model car to a post facelift P3 V70 isn’t it? |

These engines are clearly not "new designs" all of them. They are subject to traditional product refinement. New injectors, new turbos etc. There are also numerous minor variations, like adaptions for manual or automatic gearboxes.
A new engine design is like when the four cylinder B230 red-block engine series were replaced by the 5-cylinder B52xx white-block models. They had nothing in common. This engine is available in some 15 versions or so. |

Volvo UK's press release for the D5244T10 (205) described it as a new engine and went on to state:
"Our brief was to develop a modern performance diesel engine that meets the Euro 5 standard," says Derek Crabb, Vice President, Powertrain Engineering. "The previous engine has undergone constant development but has now reached the end of its potential. We therefore decided to start with a clean sheet of paper and harness the advanced technology which we have access to today. The result is even better than we dared hope. What is more, this engine has been developed entirely in-house at Volvo." If it really was a clean sheet of paper the development team started with, how odd that the outcome should be an engine of the same configuration, bore, stroke, and displacement as its predecessor. Just this morning I passed one of the "all new" Audi A4 avant models (20-plate) and it has exactly the same side profile as the 2008 MY one I had as a company car.... but then again VAG have always been masters of badge engineering.
This may help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_D5_engine

The P3 was not a face lifted P2, it was built on a completely different platform. It did have the D5 engine though... |
