Windscreen Wiper Woes (apologies for the alliteration
Minor calamity yesterday when the Valdez's near-side wiper arm went to the vertical and stopped, causing the driver's side arm to crash into it.
Having consulted with the "Book of Haynes" Chapter 12 I conducted an investigation which revealed that the cable that links the near-side spindle had snapped, so I will now have to source and fit a replacement. I'll put up some photos as and when I get the part.

It's the same set-up on a 940 as any late 740/5 Series. The OEM of the wiper motor/drive was Electrolux (but doubt the drive cable was fitted to their vacuum cleaners!!). Also doubt you can source a new drive cable these days.
I would try and source the cable or a whole motor drive system from a breaker as they are easy to remove as a whole assembly. Bob |

Otherwise it'll be a pain trying to locate a breaker with a 7 or 9-series car in stock. Out of curiosity, where you state "740/5 Series", is that one of the BMW 5-Series models and ,if so, which model year?

No ,you got it right .... Volvo 700 Series.
On the up-side that multi-core drive cable is moderately fine, and although I haven't investigated it, if you can't find a replacement I would look into trying to make a replacement up with some suitable sized Bowden cable that is readily available. There may well be some small niche firm somewhere (cycle/moto/car etc) that could do the job for you. Can't see it's impossible by any means. Best of luck, Bob P.S. - you may well find that the same wiper system was used on Saabs. |

If you search Skandix for “wire, wiper mechanism” you may well find a suitable part. It looks as though a similar mechanism was used on 200, 700 and 900 series cars. There are various part numbers and most specify LHD so in this instance a friendly main dealer may be the easiest method.

If it's of any help I have just looked on my parts disc and for a 1990 7OO Series the then Pt No for the cable was 687784-9. It was the same for either RHD or LHD cars.

Skandix still do them as suspected by Forrest. Just put my car in their system with the above Pt No. Euro 23.93. On that basis you may well find the Main Dealer or FRF (over the phone with discount) can supply. Bob

Good news
The cable is STILL available from Volvo, albeit through the "Volvo Global" portal, and one has duly been ordered from Rybrook Warrington, they being the nearer branch to me.
It costs just shy of £15 and has a two-three week lead time. Happy days!

That's the best price I have seen. Brookhouse also 'do' them in the UK at about £23, inc delivery. Just shows always try the Main Dealer. Best of luck. Bob

Mixed emotions
Good news and bad news.
The good news is that the cable arrived at Rybrooks on Wednesday and I picked it up on Thursday. The bad news is that it does NOT come with the lock-nut for the adjuster, so anyone doing the job in the future will need to recover the nut from the old cable!
