You have the drive shaft "Pimg" which is cured by XC90 bolts .. a quick visit to your dealer would have saved you a bit . volvo CV joints are amazingly trouble free even 20 year old ones ..

Question

Hi,

I have read so much information about the axle ping issue from several different sources over the last 48 hours, but I am still a little confused.

Does anyone know if the XC90 bolts which have been prescribed as a fix for this issue (part# 30714142) will fit my 2002 S60 2.4 BiFuel?

The information I have read seems to suggest that this fix is only for the later models, and I don't want to spend £35 on the XC90 bolts only to find they are not the correct part.

If I cannot positively confirm that they will fit, I think I am going to go with a new set of S60 bolts with a little help from some Loctite, and maybe also some pipe sealing compound on the axle splines.

Any input will be very gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi all, I'm wondering if my '07 XC70 is sufferring from this. I've always had a "clunk" when reversing out of the garage but just put it down to brake pads shifting / stuff taking up the slack / normal for Volvo type of thing.
Does anyone know, will "the last of the old ones" XC70 have the rubber cone bolts fitted from factory?

The car is still under factory warranty but I wouldn't want the incompetants at my local stealers to screw it up so if I would benefit from the new bolts I'll do it myself

The XC90 bolts are fine.
Spend the money.
The part of the bolt assembly you want is the rubber cone-washer, which comes off - for subsequent disassemblies.
Don't use any adhesives or sealants on the splines or you'll have a nice time trying to split the shaft/hub and cleaning them up at next disassembly.
And anyway, with the XC90 bolt, no adhesives will be required.

I've been advised against this today by a trusted indie. He reckons that the rubber cone traps water in there and that destroys your wheel bearings over time.....
Don't know how true this is but I do know this guy is usually spot on about things Volvo....

I've never seen a rusty spline behind a rubber cone conversion , in fact the rubber cone expands when the bolt is tighened and seals the splines from any water swilling around behind your VOLVO emblem ..

XC 90 bolts, everyone, just buy a pair !!! They definitely work, and then when you inevitably get that next "clonk" at least you will know it's something else other than axle ping !

DO NOT overtighten these bolts. I took some advice on the torque settings, and went WELL over the 35nms and 90dgs because my axle ping kept coming back, and I snapped a brand new bolt

Instead of paying £35 for new XC90 bolts, i ended up paying £166 to Kwik Fit for a new CV joint

Ok about Torque

I have my brand new XC90 bolts in the volvo packaging with the rubber bushes...

Now is it 50nm and thats it, no extra tighten???

Or is it 50nm and then a quarter???

Or 35nm and a half???

I have read so much info on this, and I don't want to mess this up???

Regards
