Volvo S60 Transmission issues (Not fixed)

Hi Gentlemen

I have just joined the forum and the last time I have participated in a forum was more than 15 years ago. but I have this issue which I'm desperate for a solution so I need your help.

I have a transmission issue ever since I bought it from my cousin 2 years ago.
my car is S60 T4 2012

I have 3 issues that I wasn't able to diagnose it properly, although I took it to a volvo specialist but it seems that he isn't expert enough to identify the problems properly.

1- I had kicking from the transmission gears, it appears when I slowdown stopping in a red trafic light or a road bump and accelerate again ( This issue has been solved after replacing the transmission with a second hand one)
2- I still have this sound which is gears friction that comes and goes every second when cruising or accelerating. also it affects the RPM goes up and down every second.
3- When I accelerate steadily (on the same gear speed), the speed slips.

I have had this issue since I bought it, but I don't understand how I still have issue No. 2 & 3 after replacing the whole transmission.

NOTE: I have returned it back to the mechanic and he replaced one of the sensors in the transmission but it did nothing.

I'm so confused if I should repair further or stop and get rid of it. I've already spent more than $2500 which is the same amount I paid when I bought it.

I really like the car and I wish to keep it but I don't want to spend too much.

I need your help to diagnose it properly and get those issues fixed.

you shouldn't have just replaced it without knowing WHY you replaced it.

The Thump you get is usually a solenoid pack issue but as the above post, looks like the Autobox wasn’t the only problem. So?

Are all the software upgrades up to date?

Was any adaptations made to the Autobox to combat the original issue?

Have all the wheel bearings been checked as a possible solution to the transmission noise?

Does the Noise change with speed or engine revs?

Sorry about the questions but your description is a bit vague.

You need to get it linked up to Volvo diagnostics aka VIDA to get a better picture of the issue. I personally book it into a dealership so the person investigating is Volvo trained on the diagnostics equipment. Good luck.

After Replacing the transmission it did solve one issue but there are other issues that the transmission itself which is confusing me.

There is one thing that I suspect but didn't have the chance to check it yet, I need to check the Axle shaft because the inner LH boot was broken, the mechanic said it was OK but I suspect that he didn't check it thoroughly

I’m struggling with this tbh. A drive shaft could cause a noise/ vibration. I had an 2002 S60 Auto that had faulty drive shafts. The symptom would be vibration and a rumbling noise under load eg Accelerating up a hill for example But as soon as I took my foot off the throttle it’d go away. Both of mine were worn out though but if you’ve had a driveshaft boot that split and threw all the grease out then it could be a possibility. The only way you’re going to know is by changing it or have it stripped and inspected.

Point 3, I have no idea by the description. Do you mean the gears are slipping ie the revs pick up faster than the speed? Did the mechanic who swapped the gearboxes over swap any other parts over from the old gearbox?

Curiously, if there’s no dealers near you, how do you know the software is up to date? Did you contact the previous dealers who serviced the car?

Some or all of these issues are sometimes fixed with a software update (most specifically the shift shock when slowing down). This can only be done at a dealer but doesn’t cost much. I would get the dealer to change the fluid (so you know it’s correct) and install the latest software.

I know that sounds implausible that a computer program patch could fix what’s sounds and feels like a mechanical fault but that has been my experience on my XC60 and is the process under a number of Volvo technical bulletins.

This car uses a Ford Powershift gearbox if anyone can fix it, it would be a Ford dealer.
