I'll be... fried in engine oil...

I don't know shall I laugh or cry.

Yesterday, my better half, as usual, rang her parents.
Just a chat about what when and how during our Christmas trip.

Then, dad in law wanted to talk to me (and take it quite literally- talk TO me, no interruptions) rather urgently.

According to him and his monologue, there is that thing called "corridor" in Poland, and it just became compulsory. He gave me all the details, finger matching (for deciding which way to lean on more than 2 lanes road), how to behave, what to do.. repeated 2 times.

Of course I didn't tell anyone about my... involvement here, but I still feel a bit.. stumped.

Taken a leaf out of the German Autobahn regulations.

"Rettungsgasse bilden" ( form rescue alley/lane) has been the norm since before Pontius got his pilots licence.

Yup..

And to sum up this thread- these are in use in Germany, Austria, Japan (just learned), Slovakia, Poland, few other countries..

But not here.

And by the look of it, Dept for Transport actively opposes this idea..

Why?

Quite possibly the litigious culture that we find ourselves in puts any body off of making a decision. On a parallel (which if we discuss it too far would deserve a separate thread), at Grenfell Tower the fire brigade followed established practice and told people to stay in their flats, presumably this was based on experience of similar incidents where people were safer to close their doors to keep out smoke and wait while the fire was contained rather than risk smoke inhalation and the possibility of injury whilst exiting the building, reasonable precautions until there is an unexpected added factor, and now the Fire Brigade are being blamed for the disaster. In the event of legislating the 'corridor of life' what happens when there is some other consequence? It may not be the fault of the corridor system but say a twit on a motorbike chooses the corridor to 'filter' through the standing traffic, as is legal, and then piles into the scene of the accident, who is to blame? and don't try to apply common sense because litigiousness doesn't recognise it.

Precisely, David. I was thinking along the same lines when we were discussing what we ask of the police and how we denigrate them and generally make life difficult for them. Same when people attack ambulances and health workers, who are after all doing their job and trying to help them.

Sometimes I despair of society today.

Whilst writing: @ 'marsdalebear', for the uninitiated, what do you mean by 'NIH'? If it is the National Institutes of Health, I'm afraid that I don't quite see how it gels with Thomas' comments.

Regards, John.
