You need to run a straight pipe with no silencing whatsoever from the DPF back to get any sort of improvement in sound volume on the D5s, even then it's still not as loud as you'd expect. I opted to keep the resonator on mine to stop any booming (which it does) but yes, as you said, the DPF, along with the cat & turbo go some way to muffling the sound.
