Default Rogue bush?

Several years ago (3 or 4) I put a new bush on my 144S and it had more play than the old one. Turns out there was a rogue batch of idler bushes. Brookhouse took action to replace these and theirs should be ok now.
The fault was an oversize inner metal tube that moved about on the pin of the idler, even when the nut was very tight.

Absolutely. I think the only function of the SIIA's steering wheel was to give the driver something to do while the Landie went where the hell it liked.

Though sometimes tempted I don't own a Land Rover, but often drive one of several owned by a friend. He's military so calls them Rovers...

The correct way to adjust the steering box is shown in the workshop bulletin below.

JP;

Thanks for posting that...more often than not, the factory documentation states it the best, and it should referred to first!

Cheers

This factory method does apply to a "run in" steering box in perfect condition. There will be very few now that can be described like that, so some compromise is inevitable. It is an on car version of the method used to set up the steering box on the bench before fitting. I'm sure that for many, many, years no Volvo service department has removed the Pitman arm to do this adjustment as wear in the box will very likely give false readings. Best not to over think this adjustment, just don't adjust it too tight. That will cause accelerated wear and also make the steering feel very strange due to not being able to self centre. The critical factor is having the Pitman arm fitted in the correct position, shaft and arm have matching marks, and the adjustment is made with the arm pointed exactly straight ahead. Car should be able to run straight and true, hands off, on a flat road and feel finger light at anything over about 20 mph if toe in is correct/within limits.

Default Pitman pitfalls

Once had to change to steering box on a 131 that someone had messed with. Pitman arm must have been in the wrong position. It had a small amount of play in the centre but partially jammed on slight right hand turns - very scary!
Also wouldn't go to full lock one way.
