Right. Removed the idler and bush intact. So started to strip the idler arms and track rods. Found an issue with a ball joint. This was a new arm! Looks as if the ball joint snags.it isn't smooth. So I have put the old one back on and hey presto...no noise and precise steering.
Wondering how I can free up the joint on the NOS arm..soak it in diesel?

Good that you found the apparent true cause...this just illustrates how when everything is tied together in a mechanical system, symptoms can point to the wrong place. Diesel or any light oil/penetrating fluid should eventually free up frozen joint, but question is why would a brand new joint have this issue? Production problem...no lube?...this is suspect! Isn't the Pitman Arm bush the one that member Maver1ck recently found a good all metal (with greasing fitting) replacement for? Cheers |

Summer lovin'
Grease may be the word here. Spray cans of this are available with a little plastic tube and you may be able to squeeze this under the dust cover.

Don't forget that diesel will rot any protective rubbers on the joints so these must be removed before soaking. Modern diesel fuel doesn't have much in the way of lubrication since sulphur has been all but eliminated so should only be used as a carrier for lubricant. If you can get grease into the joint unless there is a nipple, you are a better man than me Gunga Din! |

Idler Rattle
Clive hi,
Just come across this old thread which is exactly what I'm experiencing now, with the idler bush. I have obtained a poly bush without grease nipple from Simon at Brookhouse and have obtained the same symptoms that you have, namely severe knocking. This I have put down to the bush liner tube being wider than the idler shaft diameter. Simon is investigating to see if he has another bad batch or if the shaft is worn down. How was yours resolved please? Urgent replacement required as we're off for a trip in 4 days and I'm panicking! Any Amazon steering specialists in the Warwickshire/Midlands? Ric

Clive hi,
Not a problem! I'd forgotten about it too. Replaced the idler with another, but I still believe there's a knock emanating from it, but haven't changed it again. Will live with it!
