Default Advice please

Hi all just after some advice I’ve got a xc90 56 reg d5 auto 158000 miles the gearbox hasn’t been very smooth lately so had the oil changed at c p motors in polesworth they have done it twice before so not questioning there work but after they have done it today it’s a lot worse they have done full diagnostics and it’s showing a fault on the valve body and they said a mechanical fault on 2nd gear so it’s looking like needing a gearbox or a refurb can anyone recommend a place in the Midlands please, have spoken to one in Cannock and he said try the valve body first he has done a lot of them and it usually sorts it that is £1000+ vat or a full refurb £1900 + vat no idea if that is good or not also the mileage it’s on is it worth it any advice welcome thanks a lot

Have they reset the adaptions using Vida?

The TF80 boxes are usually quiuet robust even more so if its had oil changed regularly,

First what is the box actually doing, rough shifts??, if so between what gears??

Second question i would ask is if they have used right oil altho if they have done it twice before then i would guess they have,

Third did they set oil level right as to low or to high and it wont operate right,

Fourth did they reset the gearbox oil change adapations after changing oil as if they didn't it was a waste of time doing it,

Fifth there is a adaptions roadtest that can be done if there is rough shifts between N-D and 4-5 gears that can vastly improve how the box drives

Thanks for the replies they used genuine Volvo oil and reset all the adaptions and tried to adjust the parameters I trust they have done what they could have the real problem gear is 2nd when you drive it revs really high then bangs into gear hard, it is playing up in 4 th as well but not as bad as 2nd they did a full diagnostic on it with VIDA and it showed a fault I think they said the valve body they can reset it but it doesn’t sort it they think it’s a mechanical fault in the box so it’s looking like some major work, we have decided we will repair it , it’s worth more to us to keep even with the mileage worst case we looked at is the engine gives up but could put a recon engine in for half the cost of the gearbox thanks again

Hmmm... there is no scope to manually adjust the parameters, you have to put the gearbox into re-adaptation mode and go through several "exercises" - these re-learns all parameters (you can't just adjust one).

I hope it’s nothing they’ve done they have changed the oil on it before and on my s60 been out in it today and when it’s warm it’s horrible to drive until it’s in 5th and 6th. I have spoke to drive transmission who were recommended above and I am going to see them Tuesday but it doesn’t sound good from what I told them they said 2nd gear is normally the first one to play up on them as they have done lots but they did say the six speeds are a lot less common but the way this year has been going for my family I’m not surprised they said to do a full refurb on it is £1750 + vat with a 12 months unlimited mileage warranty which is abit better from what I was expecting thanks again will keep you updated on what happens with it

Sorry about that grammar is not my strong point and typing when I’m out and about, just updating it’s booked in for next Thursday and they are putting a new valve body in, they are confident this will sort the issue will keep you posted

CP Motors at Tamworth are an excellent independent Volvo specialist and they know what they are doing, therefore you can be assured that they are being honest with you.

They will have used correct ATF, done the oil counter reset, adaptation via VIDA etc, possibly even a software update.

Just to confirm what you have already discovered, the common cause is a valve body fault, but can also be a mechanical fault within the box itself, both costly repairs.

I've been through exactly the same with a previous 2006 XC90 and sadly the only remedy was a replacement box.

You have clearly costed all of your options, go with whichever suits your budget and future expectations from your car.
