XC60, Diesel 2400cm3, 2010 poor fuel economy?
I get 13 L/100km, i.e., 18 mpg in the city. I don't race around, don't step on the gas when the light turns to green. The best I got in the city was 11.8 L/100 km, 20 mpg.
Is that acceptable for this model and year? I took the car to two shops (I got it two years ago, used) and I got the same answer from both: they see nothing wrong with the car, although they couldn't tell me what's the acceptable consumption. Any ideas? |

See fuelly.
Some are worse. Some are better. I believe you can filter down by specific model, possibly in your own country.

Probably not that far off for city driving.
I used to get a combined 32mpg on my last XC60 of the same age as yours and that was around 70% on major roads with not much in towns, but when I went into town the mpg dropped like a stone - I recall looking one day and seeing it showing as 8mog on the instant consumption display 😒

Hi. I have S60 D5 63 reg. and I drive mostly in London. My average fuel consumption is around 34-35mpg.
Your doesn't seem to be alright for a diesel engine of this size. For petrol I will agree, but for diesel not. |

63 reg has a very different engine from a 10 reg, though some people would suggest all that Volvo have done to increase the power and meet different emissins regulations is to remap it
XC60 is also much thirstier than a S60

As wimorrison above I get average 31/32 mpg with mixed driving (2008 XC60) when SWMBO has it for local runs (country town) usually shows <25 mpg so yes a bit thirsty but never mind !! Best ever was 37 on a long motorway trip on cruise at indicated 70.
Better than my previous V70 1999 auto petrol, which averaged 26 but MUCH less when "enjoying" the performance !!

I have the lower powered 2010 xc60 manual 175hp that was made for the buyer who wanted mpg over mph. I have never seen less than 31 mpg (imperial) when used for town driving and this was when the dpf sensor was playing up. If you have the full powered auto you would obviously see a good deal lower mpg. My mpg figures are using the calculator in the car, maybe if you are taking your figures from your calculator it could be giving you false readings. Some owners use the very best diesel and achieve better mpg than with cheapest diesel, although the extra cost needs to calculated. You could also have a power chip or similar installed. You could check your air filter for starters and the amount of weight you are carrying as the figures you give do to me seem very poor. Could your brakes be binding or your tyres low on pressure. A roof box can cause drag but about town it shouldnt be to bad.

Yes I know the engine has some very minor changes and the car is a bit heavier , but what I want to say is that for this size of engine and power 18mpg is way too much, when I got 35mpg in London for comparison! |

Not sure what engine you have as around 2010 they change quite a bit and not only did the power increase but I believe there was a significant improvement in economy from my reading of the form posts. I.E. the 185 D5 was quite thirsty but the 205 D5 improved this a fair bit, the 215 then made further improvements. It's also where it went from single turbo to dual.
I have a V70 D5 215 auto and do a fair amount of town driving and normally get somewhere around 30mpg and 40-45 on a long run depending upon what type of road I am on. Other things I have noticed, Warm up phase uses a lot more diesel and when it's below about 5C it uses even more. If you use all the power then I am sure I could get it down to 18mpg or less. I had a P2 V70 T5 before, now that could use a serious amount of fuel without even trying. Last edited by kdst5; Nov 15th, 2017 at 13:11. |

It is the 205 variant that I have been talking about and even on an urban road 35mpg was totally unachievable let alone driving through London.
Also the on board mpg display was hopelessly inaccurate as it suggested 37mpg (from memory) but that actual brim to brim was much lower. If you get 35mpg brim to brim then you are very, very lucky
