Replacement key - 2018 XC60
Hi There,
Not sure if it’s a simple battery thing but my spare key is dead and the main one is becoming more temperamental when opening the car. Don’t want to get caught out if the main one gives out on me. Can anyone provide any advice on key issues or recommendations on where to source replacements if required. Many Thanks Glenn

First thing to do is to replace the batteries with a reputable brand such as Duracell, Panasonic, Sony, etc. Cheap batteries cause more problems than they're worth.
Afaik, replacement keys must be sourced from a Volvo dealer as they have to be paired with the car's locking system. They're not cheap either! The following applies to cars with Keyless entry but I don't know if it's the same with non-Keyless cars. Someone else might confirm this. In extremis, the passenger door can be opened using the emergency manual key located in the fob. This will set off the alarm but it can be silenced by putting the dead key (assuming it's just a battery problem) in the central cup holder and turning on the ignition. The car can also be driven this way even although the key's battery is dead.

It is almost certain it is just a quick battery replacement that is required CR2032 cell batteries one in each fob. YouTube video link attached to show how. Make sure you take note of which way up the battery so you don't replace it the wrong way up.

Agree with Lexman, this could well be a battery problem. Try replacing the batteries first.
If you do need a new key, they are expensive. Back in September 2020 I was quoted £350 for a complete new key (gulp!). That includes a new key blade which may not be necessary as it could be transferred from your existing key. New keys do have to be paired with the car, which also incurs a charge. I ended up paying a total of £160 for a new key without a new key blade. As a result of the 'care key' debacle (a whole other story), Volvo were offering replacement keys for £75 in late 2020. Not sure whether that's still the case.
