Right new head bolts in, try her out up the road, come back for a check and the expansion tank is full to the brim. Calling fan on (first time I've seen it on) and monumental pressure in the coolant pipe, but the bottom hose is still stone cold?? So out comes the brand new thermostat in a pan of water, low and behold 100 degrees and still not opening. Just goes to show even new stuff can be defunct . Fitted another new one but tried it first! All is good again!

Had a cheeky blast on the dyno and got 237bhp 364ft/lb. Pretty happy but still needs some tweaking, not so much for power but to tone down the delivery a little!

Ooh, nice paint! Very tasteful. They do look nice without the tea-cosy on. That darned oil separator gadget upsets my sensibilities though. Surely it must be possible to mount that in line further back?

Oh, and could you remind me where you said you got the strut brace from - memory like a sieve...

Thermostat on these is not in an ideal location either. Took me 3 attempts to get the housing to sit flush, leaked about 50ml of coolant a week until finally got it to sit right.

What did you do to fit the strut brace (later c70 job?), just bend the fuel filter bracket or did you shim the brace up and over it?

Normal 850 brace, Just welded a washer onto the filter bracket to rotate it back enough to clear the brace. Very simple really. Someone once told me I'd have to squeeze it in various places to get it to fit?? No squeezing required on mine.

No the thermostat is not ideal but it works well on this engine as they don't really ever get that hot.

All is not well

It would seem my head lifting incident has damaged the head gasket too much and it is now buggered lol, So head off time! I'm going to take advantage of the crappy situation and do some more modification. I have a fully reconditioned head on the way, new valves, seats, guides, re-face, springs, pressure tested etc etc.

Once I get it I'm sending it to Gardias Engine Services in Witney to start opening it up a bit. Hopefully with a bit of work on the head and a thicker gasket (maybe 2) I will be able to push the boost up a bit more, add more fuel, and get some more power.

I'm getting a little frustrated by all the things going wrong at the moment but modifying cars is never easy (or cheap) as we all know. But it will all turn out well in the en, I hope!

2 head gaskets would last about 15 seconds at full boost!

If I were you, I'd Google Ferriday Engineering.
They used to make copper head gaskets to any thickness you like if you give them a standard gasket as a template. Even as thick as decompression plates for N/A-turbo conversions.
The Ford boys use them quite a lot, and they put some boost through Cosworth YBs!

Presuming they're still going anyway.
