Default "Start prevented try again" and Key problem

One of my keys works fine.

The spare unlocks the car but won't start it, coming up with "Start prevented, try again"

The dealer tells me I need a new key at £170 because it the electronics module has failed. I find this hard to believe. Any thoughts?

Better still, is there any way I can just permanently defeat this annoying "Start prevented, try again" - it's an old car which isn't going to get nicked so I am happy just to switch this security level off.

Thanks

When trying the spare that doesn't work, hold the one that does work close to the ignition barrel.
If the car starts, you could remove the chip and discreetly tape it near the area and buy a cheap new non coded key so either will work.
Despite me only having a 2002 which is older than your old car 2006, I would still rather have a fully working pair of coded keys though and so would my insurers.

Sounds like the transponder in the key is knackered & that will be a dealer job to replace. You can't disable the built-in immobiliser for obvious security reasons.

stejan1965 did a new fix it for you. I have an 2011 xc 90 that has been plagued by this "start prevented" message since last summer. Have a new key on order! Hoping it will work and that I don't need a new CEM.

You have a 5 button remote key as it comes in 3 bits.
