Default 240 Wagon Tailgate changes

Can somebody please tell me when 240 tailgates changed the window assembly? I'm confused as to which years had which arrangement. Thanks.

Around 1990. Changed to the large glass bonded screen. Earlier rear screen rubber held glass.

Am I right in thinking that despite the window size, the complete tailgate assemblies themselves are interchangeable?

Yes.

Sure I read the tailgate washer is in a different position, but not 100% on that. The tailgate same, just glass area.

Yes that’s the only difficulty in swapping as I understand, the washer is above the window on the actual tailgate on late cars, but it’s on the rear wing on RHS on early ones, so potentially late tailgate on early car with mean two washers or holes. Early tailgate on late car no washers/ no holes.

Another difference that exists:~
Earlier tailgate widow & rubber are recessed into the door frame.
The later cars have the rubber & glass flush with the frame.
Otherwise same dimensions as previously mentioned.

We made the rash assumption that Volvo would not have gone to the expense of changing the press tool. They must have, though: the earlier glass and rubber together are smaller than the later glass and can't be fitted to a later tailgate. Also, you cannot simply bond a newer glass into the recess in the older tailgate metalwork.
