Try half a revolution...should be enough to get rid of the rattle. Also try not to move the shaft too much when lifting as there's a chance of damaging the actuator diaphram.
I suppose it would be no harm to have the boost measured if you can lay your hands on a guage.

You may find that it is just the pin has snapped also...this can cause the same rattle when lifting off

The retaining pin?

The rattle is the wastegate vibrating/chattering due to wear and by tightening the actuator arm you are taking up the slack. As above, just half a turn (clockwise) should be sufficient and be sure to hold the actuator arm with a mole/vice grips.

I thought I'd run into trouble doing this as the nut looked pretty rusty.
Nothing a bit of trusty WD40 couldn't sort, soaked it last night and undone it this morning. One full turn clockwise and the rattling has now stopped. Wish I knew about this fix a while back! I always thought it was a loose heat shield or something. Took it for a quick spin and not sure if it was the placebo effect or the fact that I've been driving round in a 1.2 Clio but I have no idea why I am selling the said car. Performance is phenomenal with safety to boot! |
