Hi all,

I've just had the unenviable task of removing a blown heater core (yes it's exactly as fun as it sounds) and I'm now staring at this:

https://ibb.co/fFmxzqY

https://ibb.co/6YdSB5h

https://ibb.co/54zs0yz

Which doesn't look to match what I thought would be the original part (no. 1021541 on skandix)
Any thoughts?

The part number you quote is for a spoiler so definitely won't look anything like it!

https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...right/1021541/

Just to add insult to injury, it's a Saab part too!

No parts shown for Volvo with that number on Skandix.

Spoiler alert! I have no idea where that number came from, must have copy pasted from the wrong site!

This is the one I meant: https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-part...ating/1021451/

Best part of £300 with postage too...

It doesn't look to have been manhandled but too similar to be a coincidence, you might be onto something there.

I'm hoping for something a little less spendy than the skandix part, maybe along the lines of:

I see what you did there - you interposed the 5 and 4 in the first one.

Rather you than me stripping out a heater matrix, can i ask why you stripped it out in the first place?

After a long drive (mostly stuck in traffic jam on a hot day) I noticed the coolant level was low, carpets soaked, and this was after a recent flush. I've had a similar problem before in another 940 and ended up just bypassing it, but my better half insisted that I would need heat come winter...

I did suspect a valve blockage (will be replacing that too for peace of mind) but not in any doubt this heater's shagged as it's where all the liquid's come from, and it doesn't hold any pressure.

If it's brass as the others linked to appear to be, you should be able to not only identify where it's leaking from but also resolder a joint if that's where it's leaking or effect a soldered repair with 60/40 tin/lead solder rather than having to find a replacement.

If after repairing it, you find it gives little or no output, swap the hoses on the stubs (you can do this in the engine bay) as often if the hoses are the wrong way round it creates an airlock in the matrix.
Swapping them allows full flow again with the suction side (leading back to the pump) being on the lower end so isn't trying to pull against a head of gravity.
