Didn’t think it could get that bad, mines a bit rusty along the front edge but I’ll check out the rest.

Mine's far worse. That one appears serviceable? All I had to do was give it a shove and the seal lets the glass go.

The outer seal-bearing edge (shown rusty in your pix) has near gone. I'll post pix later. I was warned by Barry at Wyboston, he sees more ropey P80s than the rest of us put together - and looking round his yard, he's not wrong.

it's not the seal per se - more when water sits in it, this rots the pressing, thus the bond lets go.

Angry dealer fix

Hi all,

I took my tank to the Stoke dealership who weren't keen to fix mine bit I insisted. They put a big note on the bottom of my job sheet not to open mine!

They replaced the rubber seal as request, but due to the corrosion and the new seal I am unable to open the sunroof into the car. The new seal and sunroof plus corrosion are to big for the aperture!

I can at least pop it up though but have to gently put palm over palm to fully level once closed.

I can see why they lift, the roof acts like an aircraft wing at speed, the low-pressure air over a relatively large surface should lift the panel easily. There's smaller spoilers... Once the bond goes, there's nothing but the lip of the seal to stop this.

Er.. I'm not quite sure why you'd take the job to a dealer. It's not truly a seal issue.

They are correct, a new seal will leak if corrosion is not sorted, hence you can't use your roof. Likely you didn't need a new seal. Without the job done, may as well fire in builder's mastic? it'd be just as effective, and see it done for a fiver.

The root of the problem either requires the whole sun-roof assembly replaced - if the parts are available (doubtful) - or the sort of restoration-works dealers won't undertake.

As the link, I've just completed a full strip-down. Sourcing a salvageable pressing, this was KuRust treated, primered and bonded with Mannol 'Windshield' adhesive. Bill to sort has been £50 all-in, and best part of two half-days' work. One half-day for parts sourcing, one half-day to do the job. Plus dryign times. I shudder to think what a dealer wants for a new assembly including labour. It has to be a £1500-1600 job, and it wouldn't surprise me if we saw the other side of £1800? That's a V70 killing bill?

Corrosion sorted, re-bonded, doubt most of you need a new seal. It leaks because of corrosion, not the seal per se.

I cleaned-up my mouldy looking old seal, with Fairy liquid, and it looks and operates like new. The whole mech. has done 20 years, not properly rust-proofed from new, it is now. The job's done right. it'll outlast the car. Whatever sends the car to scrap-metal heaven it won't be the sun-roof.
