Note the goodyear average wear is a lowly 74%
Some people get good mileage, but many get poor mileage too.
Compare to the Pirelli with 86%.
These are summary tables of course, but they are an aggregate of the user reviews.
I never said the goodyear are bad tyres, just that they wear worse than the pirelli. The goodyear are good tyres, but for me, personally, the wear inconsistency put me off.
I can vouch for the pirelli personally.

So yes, I am quoting user reviews!

However, I cannot source these tyres (not even from Fulda) anymore, as the size is uncommon, except from specialist vintage suppliers who charge astronomical prices. It was suggested that I choose 195-65-R15 tyres, and recommendations are: Cinturato P1 Verde, Goodyear EF Grip Performance and Dunlop Sport BluResponse. They are all the same price and have good wet grip, economy and low decibel ratings.

If anyone has used any of these tyres I'd be glad to hear your comments, before I decide which make to opt for. The only misgivings I have about using the said tyres is that of the inner walls rubbing on suspension parts on full lock and maybe any speedo inaccuracies.

Thanks for any good advice.
Hi,

I found these too: https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyr...r15-89v-935863

Obviously I'm digging up an old thread but did anyone actually try the Radar tyre was it any good?
I'm looking at those for my Amazon, they're good value and have an authentic classic tyre look!

Maybe they're not such a good idea, I've got the age old dilemma of trying to choose a new tyre that is slightly in period but not the price of a kidney also not going to upset the balance of the car!
I've seen one guy on here championing 165/80 x 15's even on 5.5" rims, I was leaning more towards 185/80 x 15's as I also have 5.5" rims but obviously don't want body rubbing or overly heavy steering as a result.
The car is currently fitted with 175/65 x 15's and they just don't fill the arch enough and I'm not keen on the modern tread pattern either (I know- what a geek).
Recommendations greatly appreciated.

Pirelli CN36's at Longstone Tyres..... Just right for what you need. Proper period tyres in the right size.

If you fit 185/80s they will throw the speedo out and possibly land you a few speeding fines! You will also have the width problem.

I'd suggest going for 195/65/15 and if you experience any fouling, use a 5mm spacer on the effected axles (one spacer per wheel) to bring the wheels out 5mm from the hub and therefore the tyres 5mm from what they're fouling.

As for tread pattern, tyre compounds evolve and what would have been a good tread pattern for a tyre compound 40 years ago might be horrendous now. Also suspension has evolved as well so it all makes it tricky to recommend a specific tyre on an older car.

Remember a lot of the tyre reviews are posted by people who have just got new tyres on their cars so the new ones will be more grippy than the old ones, quieter and smoother. Also the area of the country plays a big part, many different areas use slightly different road surfaces to the point where a route i drove regularly about 20 years had a county border and i could tell without looking when i crossed it because the road surfaces were vastly different. Neither had been resurfaced recently and both were in reasonably good condition but an obvious difference nonetheless.

As such, when you look at all the reviews on tyres, look at the area the poster is from. Then try and narrow your choices down to tyres that have good reviews in the area you live. For example, in the area i live, Pirellis and Falken are favoured over Michelin and Goodyear. In the west midlands, the latter seem to get better reviews than Pirelli and Falken.
Having driven in both areas on Falkens, i can see why they didn't do well in the west midlands.

I'd also advise against Goodyear, i've known several people (some on this forum) who have had bad experiences with Goodyear tyres cracking up at low mileages/ages and in fact the last one had all 5 refunded after ~2 years and a set of Bridgestones (much better in many respects than the Goodyear) fitted instead and so far, no problems at all.

As for Longstone Tyres, a well respected and known company but i find them expensive - they advertise heavily in things like Practical Classics and other magazines, none of which comes cheap. Somebody has to pay for that advertising - usually the customer in one form or another!

I just got these for my 142, not on yet. With the big sidewall they don’t look too out of place but if you want to look more period then go for 165 tyres. If you are worried about the correct look then older tread pattern style but with wider tyres isn’t really correct either if you get what I mean. If you drive normally there really is no need apart from aesthetics to chose a wider tyre, especially if it’s a good modern tyre.

Cheers everyone there's a lot of information here so I'll go away and try and digest it!

Is anyone running a 165 on the repro 5.5 inch rim and if so do you have a picture of it please?

Doug.
