Brake drum puller

Good afternoon all,

I have previously seen on here that there maybe potential to borrow the titled from the club, how do I start that process?
I bought a puller from Amazon (German made so I had high hopes) but it’s just not man enough!

Before you start with the heavy weapons make sure you've done all the essential slackening-off brake adjusters etc as sometimes getting the drums off can get extremely physical!
I loaned my beefy professional puller to a local friend after he "heard noises" inside his drums. His profession is engineering so knows how far to go: heat, club-hammer, leaving overnight under load, etc all to no avail. So much so that he stripped the square-thread in the puller so had to make a new spindle - still nothing. He therefore went to an engineering company to use their hydraulic equipment - and still it refused to release, but the noises stopped (!) so he gave up!
When last discussed he was preparing to smash the cast-iron drum off if it happens again - but of course we haven't been driving much lately.

I have seen some home made ones that have looked quite substantial that bolt to the wheel hub with a massive centre bolt to apply the pressure needed.
I could draw a puller using AutoCAD if I had a pattern or even a rough drawing to work from. That could then be used to get a fabricator or machine show to make a puller ? if it helps let me know.

I see you're relatively new here, so if I haven't welcomed you, I'll do that now...then suggest you have a look at my collection of Drum and Puller notes and best practices here: https://www.sw-em.com/Brake_Drum_Notes.htm

If the typical, normal, Puller and best practices don't bring the desired results, the next step is to apply (almost) IRRESISTABLE FORCE with a hydraulically aided Puller...that usually brings separation...but in the rare case that it does not (as is the case with a poor soul on the US West coast right now, who I am working with remotely), I have some other suggestions which you can work up to...when that 544 owner finally gets the Drum off, I plan to put everything we/he learned into an entire new section of those linked notes...but for now his Drum has ignored EVERY common, plus some uncommon attempts to separate it from the Tapered Axle...including causing the seals of the hydraulic puller ram to fail,and also rip the threads out of that Puller's Hub adapter...it's an ongoing still-in-progress story, thermally aided techniques, PLUS a replacement hydraulic puller are next on the list...

...so you are not the first to need to do this and have a tough time of it, so stay positive, and use mega force carefully and correctly ONLY!

The critical thing about pullers for this job is having a very fine thread. This multiplies the torque considerably. Without seeing your Amazon puller we've no idea what you are using. The Volvo pattern puller from Brookhouse is about the best you can get if you can't source an original. It's £81.90. Note that it pulls on the centre. There are multi arm types that will do a similar job but they don't concentrate the pull so well. Claw types that fit to the edges of the drum are worthless and will just crack or break your drums. The loan of an original puller with a £100 deposit might be possible from someone locally. If your drums are being obstinate the original is the only way to go IMO.

My intention now is to modify the puller I bought to replicate the one used in “Amazon cars” brake drum removal video that’s on YouTube!

Apologies for the delay but I managed to get my puller made by using parts from an existing puller and hey presto it worked!
Unfortunately I can't get the photos of it to upload, the last couple of times I've struggled with this is there a knack to it?

The trick to getting photos to upload is to make sure they are small enough. Even mobile phones these days produce resolutions that the forum software just wasn't intended to use. Resize a landscape picture to say 1000 X what ever it gets to be and I'm sure the picture will be accepted.

You probably need to make the file size smaller. When I email a few pics from my phone I normally have a option to make them smaller, this is how I do it from my phone. I then save the pics and attach them.
