Default Well I’ve fixed my power steering

My XC90 has been plagued with a power steering twitch ever since I bought it back in October.
I gave it a flush & the correct fluid, but that did nothing.
It improved after fitting fresh tyres, but was still quite unpleasant.
I decided to pop a new auxiliary belt & tensioner kit on as the whole lot was quite noisy. I also discovered a lump missing out of the pump pulley. I bought a good used pump yesterday & fitted the lot this morning.
I have to be honest I wasn’t expecting miracles & remained convinced the rack was at fault.
While I was in there I changed the alternator as my freewheeling pulley was seized.
On start up the whole lot was noticeably quieter & the power steering is now light & smooth in operation.......result!

Hi mate, glad to hear you've fixed it!

is it possible to check the status of the pump pulley without pulling off any belts etc? I'm wondering if I have the same problem?

Cheers!

I honestly thought the pump wouldn’t fix it, but I thought it was worth a punt while I had the belt off. My pulley was visibly missing a lump out of the edge & the pump had a tiny bit of end float, this was easily detectable by pulling & pushing the pulley in & out. I knew the other car I’ve been cannibalising had a newish pump on it so I went & got it.
It’s a relatively easy job & at £30 for a used pump, I’m very pleased with the result
