Alarm question

I just replaced my car alarm siren however I don;t have any car fobs. I was testing if alarm would work and I closed the car and left window open. I then try to open door from inside expecting the alarm to start but the door wouldn't open. Could anyone confirm if this is the expected behaviour?
So how I check if the alarm works? LED on top of dash never flashes. I am wondering if previous owner have installed any Volvo software to disable the siren and if so how can I remove such software?
The questions are:
1-how can i know if alarm is working of not?
2-if not how can i know if this was via volvo software installation disabling my siren and how to remove the software? thanks
