Volvo 240 GLT 1990 2300, just failed MOT.

I have a much loved Volvo 240 in blue/ green. Ive owned it for 2 years and unfortunately I just can't afford to pay the £600 to pass the MOT. The water pump is leaking (and I was going to change the cam belt too). Also back breaks are unsafe and passenger front tire had it.
It has done over 230k miles and more but the dash pod has gone I think as this has now stopped working. The speedo and temp gauge works fine but revs and petrol gauge don't.

On the good side it has a brand new radiator!!

Lots of original features including radio which works intermittently. It also has battered black leather seats with head rests and all mats etc. all electric windows work. Even under bonnet light. Tow bar too and boot liner. The previous owner put spot lamps and an air horn in which is an added bonus. Haven't found any rust and original trim still there.

I really really don't want to break it up for parts as I had to do for my favourite 240 torslander which felt like sacrilege! I would love some advice about what to do, with a bit of work I reckon it could do another 100k but I am not mechanically minded.
I would be happy to accept offers (all considered) if someone could (pretend at least) that they wouldn't break it up!

I live in Hampshire so collection would be the only option unless I take a sledge hammer to it.

hi there its a dam shame its going to cost you that much if i lived any closer i would of had the car off you i normally travel for cars but with it not being drivable re-water pump makes it a touch awkward

It has been driving fine with the water pump, just having to top it up every couple of days. I had actually thought it would breeze the MOT. Gutted.

I'm no expert on MOTs, but I'm pretty sure the water pump won't cause a fail. You're obviously monitoring it and topping up, so that job could be done a bit later.

As for the MOT items, a good part-worn tyre should be £40. Rear brakes, assuming it needs new discs and pads, is not an expensive job. Parts are about £60, see links below. It is definitely a DIY proposition if you want to have a go, or there might be a helpful forum member locally who would assist you with it for a few beers!

I can't recall exactly what size tyres it will have, so you need to check, but if it's 185 65 15, here's a new Conti for £30 delivered.

Find a back street tyre place and they'll swap fit it for you. (The big chain tyre places will only fit tyres they supply, so ignore them).

I normally pay £7.50 per wheel, but that's cheap... but £10-15 should cover it.

Used to live in Drayton.......if I was still there I'd be helping you out. As mentioned water pump and brakes are defo' DIY. I think Water Pump was one of the first jobbies I attempted.... and If I can.........
