Ignition won't turn past position 1
Hello I'm new to the forum, hoping this is in the right place..
I have a Japanese imported 2007 XC70 2.5T auto -old shape, facelift. I've had the ignition problem as mentioned on previous threads: https://volvoforums.com/forum/2001-2...-switch-65553/ The key wont go past pos 1- just happened when I got back in the car one day. The RAC came out to look and took off the cowls and unscrewed the electrical ignition from the barrel/steering lock so now can drive with key in pos 1 and using a screwdriver to turn the electrical part. I phoned my local independent volvo garage who said the new part from volvo is £228, need VIN so they can order it. They called back saying volvo are asking if this is an imported car, and if so they can't do anything to help.. I'm hoping that this was due to them not having key details on their system rather than just being bloody minded! So what to do next? Well, I am considering easing down the baseplate - the solution has worked for others. If it doesn't work what are my solutions? Having watched online videos, the next stage seems to be taking assembly off, drilling it out to get the key cylinder part out and then putting it into a new assembly (or asking a locksmith to do). Or some people mention using new key and replacement unit and taping one of the old keys close by, etc Surely there must be a work around for getting a new barrel matched to my car. I mean, if the car is manufactured in Sweden, shouldn't the key details be on a central Volvo database somewhere? Last edited by Nearlyworks; Oct 17th, 2019 at 19:39. Reason: wrong place |

If you get this . Try going along to a locksmith . I had a similar problem with an imported Toyota I bought some years ago Toyota wanted to sell me complete new locks and local locksmith fixed it for £10.

Thanks for your help.. I managed to bodge it myself, but agree, a locksmith would have been my next port of call if this had failed. Volvo replacement steering lock/ignition lock is £228 but the they couldn't find my key details on their database so said that actually it would be ALL the locks in the car and ignition changing + reprogramming, didn't get a quote but suspected it might have been more than a decent second hand volvo..

Arhhh - mine has done exactly the same this morning. Took cowl off, removed switch and started in pos 1 to get to work.
Weird that it then reported to me "Electrical service urgently required" and windows would not work. Why, I only took the switch off and didn't disconnect. Got back to car this eve, the car would not start - seems that battery has gone flat or something else worst... Something to do with electrical service but key fails - two issues or ??? NearlyWorks - what was the bodge to get the key past pos 1? Did you see any of the other faults? |

When this happened to my daughter's V70 2.5T 2004, I ordered a new lock through Volvo. It was manufactured in Germany, to fit the keys for the car.
It was delivered in one day, including milling the correct key profile. Fast turnaround indeed. One of the screws holding the lock can be drilled out from below, since it's mounted in a through hole. The other one I hammered about with a pointed chisel to the side of the conical head. |
