Default V70 Battery .. 2008

The battery in my car is fine .. at the moment .... but !! ....can battery be charged from mains battery charger without removing battery from car ?? ... can't run the car these days due to restrictions, so can't reach levels required before battery starts to charge ... short runs are bad news ...... want to be sure battery doesn't go flat before problems arise.

Yes - on the P3 70 platform the battery is vented via a pipe running away from the battery compartment so no issues charging in situ without disconnecting (but don't start it...)

The method to connect the charger is documented in your manual - positive lead to positive battery terminal - negative lead to chassis earthing point - this is to preserve the accuracy of the data in the battery monitoring system.

As stated, red + charger lead to positive terminal and black- lead to a good metal earth contact in the engine bay. If you are not using the vehicle, you can leave the battery on constant charge, as all modern good quality battery chargers will reduce the charging rate as the battery becomes fully charged.

Opps!

I have disconnected my 12v battery for a charge as the car has not moved in 6+ weeks. I found this article due to me looking for a way to set the cars ignition to P2 before I re-connected the battery. Disconnecting the battery is the way I have re-charged batteries to Volvo for over 20yrs.
Please tell me I have not messed up big time...

Cheers
Bob

Hi Bob, bad news I'm afraid, it resets the mileage, wipes the ECU, stops the keys from working...sorry, I'm pulling your leg!

I've disconnected the battery on my P3 2007 S80 umpteen times for various reasons, and it causes no issues I've been aware of, except the clock goes to 12:00. As a precaution, I always make sure I have the drivers door open (and the key in my pocket) as having the door shut with the key inside is tempting fate that for some reason the car would lock and alarm when you connect up, locking you out the car, but that's just best practice on any modern car. I also pull out the alarm siren and horn fuses beforehand, as reconnecting has triggered my S80 alarm to sound on a few occasions in the past, which adds an unwelcome sense of panic and embarrassment to the procedure! Hope this helps.

AS ferg55 says no problem disconnecting your battery. To protect the systems before disconnecting the battery allow the car to stand with all circuits switched off for 10min . this allows all the computers to close properly. Reconnect positive first then negative

The ford 2.0D engine ECU can loose its memory if left without power for a while , this will need a tow to the dealer to reload the software ..
