Boost Gauge - Remap
My XC was already remapped when I purchased it, produces a little under 200bhp I think. I plan to have it remapped again, by someone I trust. The reason being I don't think the remap that's on the car at the moment is a good quality one, hesitates a little too much, possibly some cheap generic file used instead of one specifically tuned to my car on a rolling road. The file will be removed this weekend and compared to an original(standard) file to see exactly what changes have been made to see if things can be improved.
However, before all this is done I want to measure the amount of boost being produced when under load. My friend who will be remapping the car gave me cheap digital boost gauge to install so I could compare before and after the remap. I've been told to expect about 1.5 bar of boost as more than this can burst the intercooler, has anyone experienced this? Pushing boost close to 2 bar early on is possible and helps with hesitation but is risky. Anyone have any experience with all this, your input would be appreciated. |

Well I've started to install the boost gauge. Not as hard as I was expecting to honest, a little drilling and tapping, a bit of lathe work to reduce the size of the hose barbed nipple thingy. Installed the pressure sensor on the bulk head and run the pipe to it at the same time as I did the vacuum system pipes(http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=180575).
Just need to mount the gauge some where and wire it up. All good so far. Attached a few pics for those of you that may be interested. |

I decided to fit the gauge into the grill in front of the satnav if there's enough space behind it, just need to source a second hand grill first, not going to destroy the original(http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...32#post1420432). Am I right in thinking the gauges are installed in a diesel because diesels don't have a vacuum to measure like petrol engines do as there's no throttle, so what vacuum are you measuring? Quote:

yes the fuel filter does the same job.
the vac is plumed in to the outport pipe that feeds the turbo on the TCG so that i no what vac i am getting at idle and when the throttle is pressed. . mike

Why do you monitor it, in case of leaks or just so you know what the vac is? Last edited by Shadeyman; May 22nd, 2013 at 08:51. |

the downfall of this system is the vac side for the turbo, a typical example are the pads if they are leaking they can effect the vac amount to the turbo.also you can monitor if the Tcg is doing its job, this is more important for me when i was running the Maps on the car as Maps can mask small issues.

I've just replaced the tubing on the vac system.
4mm from the vac to the first T piece then 3mm from then on. The slightly narrower gauge pipe seems to have tightened things up, definitely a faster response to the throttle at all rpm. Maybe replacing the pipe has cured a few minor leaks and as a result tightened things up, either way it was worth doing. Do you remap the car yourself? How much boost are you running at the moment? |
