It's possible to repair the wire elements - Halfords sell a conductive paint.

Rear window heater
Hi Dave. Should you hear the relay? You would have thought so yes, but having consulted my wiring diagram I can't see a heated rear screen relay as such, just the main relay that's operated by the ignition switch. It looks as though the rear window heater switch is fed from No 5 fuse direct, then to the element itself. Other things fed from the same relay include the reverse lights (manual cars only) and the horn. If these all work my guess would be that that relay is OK. The feed from fuse no 5 is a heavy blue wire, which runs to the switch. from the switch there should be a heavy yellow wire - which runs the length of the car to the rear window heater, and a thinner grey wire, which is the earth wire. Check that you've got power from the switch to earth with a test lamp or multimeter. If you do then you've probably got a break either in the length of yellow wire, or more likely, where either the live feed, or the black earth leave the heater element through the hatch hinges. A quick test would be to bypass these connections temporarily.
Be aware that ES hatches are rarer than rocking-horse doodoos, and that the heat from the element could shatter the glass! When I had my ES I never used the hrw for exactly that reason! Cheers Jack Last edited by capt jack; Mar 5th, 2010 at 18:30. |
