These engines are the odd ones out in the Volvo line-up as they are neither the new 2litre engines nor the older 5 cylinder range. It would be interesting to know if these are sourced from Ford as were the previous 4 cylinder petrol engines.
I heard that Volvo were free to develop all their own engines under Geely, and they would redesign all their cars and fit them with their own engines within the next four years. The new XC90 is the first of the new models.

I'd heard about the 3 cylinder being in development but I didn't know they were trying it out in a prototype already. The 4 cylinder D2 engines in the V40 are made in Sweden I think as that Peugeot designed engine is made in about 5 countries, including an engine plant in Sweden. The D2 version Volvo fit is modified by them.

That's interesting. Never knew that.

That was definitely the case with the older 1.6l D2. The V40 now has a 2l D2 - which is a VEA engine.

Is it a derated D4 with a 6 speed autobox? Or an all new engine?

From what I have heard the new 2l VEA is the same block as a D4 but with 1 turbo instead of 2, so not as simple as a derated engine. But cannot back this up as its just hear say on my part!

Thanks. It is annoyingly difficult to find technical details of the engines Volvo fit. They are very quick to promote the most boring irrelevant details of new models in the brochures but tech info seems to be a no go area, the one thing that would encourage me to purchase a new model!

From information I read a while ago:

D2 & D3 = 1 turbo
D4 & D5 = 2 turbos

This is my understanding also, but there can often be confusion and what makes matters worse is dealers often have no clue themselves.
I've heard a few times that potential buyers would look to buy a D2 and a simple remap would put it into D4/5 territory output wise, but a think some caution needs to be taken if you think this, whilst the engines may share the same architecture they may have different turbo set-ups which will limit the maximum potential output, there is some sense in buying a D2 and unlocking it to say a D3 level, but do not assume a D2 is simply a detuned D4/5.

Look at polestars offerings on the D4 with a tune to 200hp from 190 (although the 190 can easily reach 200 bhp even on the stock map) and torque up from 450 to 470 ish. Rica on the other hand state a possible maximum of 230hp from there remaps of the D4 well into D5 territory.
Which makes sense as Polestar is an arm (well now it's wholly owned by) Volvo why would they simple offer a warranty assured remap to D5 outputs for around £800, they need to keep some distance to between the D4/5
