General: - Running In??? / Fuel Consumption

Having took delivery of an XC90 last friday with 60 miles on clock, am I supposed to run it in.

I was aware that modern cars are pre run in at build factory, but is it still best to take easy and run below 3000 revs?

Only used half a tank £30 and seem to be getting about 24mpg generally around town. Is this likely to change when a little more used.

Had an Audi Allroad prior to this and only got 20mpg ish, so any more than this is a bonus. However reading some reports on here saying they are getting 30mpg+?

Very happy with car.

yes they always say the car is run-in at factory. But really? Can this be true? I am not so convinced. Every car that we have had since new, I always followed this strict rule and all the cars never missed a beat engine wise. Also when compared with another same car, always got this comment.. they said my car pulled better especially top-end.

1) I always kept the car within 2/3 of the rev range. So that equates to about 4000rpm on a 6000rpm rev limit.

2) Never give it kick-down or full throttle on gear 1 and gear 2.

3) Run good petrol (usually super)

Do all the about for about 1000~1500 miles.

Then I slowly increase the rev range in gear 2, gear3, ... gear 5 by 500rpm every week. So that would mean, 4500rpm, then 5000rpm, then 5500~6000rpm.

At this stage, I use the car as per normal but first will do an oil change plus filter about 3000miles. The dealers will tell me its of no use but I still do this. And I rest well knowing, any tiny metal bits that might have rubbed out will be in that old filter and oil.

Well thats what I would do but I am sure there are many others who would say just rev the car max from day one.

Some claim that driving overly gently to runin actually reduces the performance of the engine in the long run.
Should drive normally without redlining and not reving hard when cold.

Same with the oil changes - again there's many a claim that changing the oil early is actually detrimental. Some actually say don't change for the first 20k then it's back to 10 k after that.

I always say don't be daft but don't be overly gentle.
