Thank you everyone.

I have put two gallons of fuel in, and it worked!!! I am now at a total loss at how a defective fuel pump can only stop pumping when the fuel level drops beneath 1/8 tank.

No doubt when I get to examine the pump I will understand.

I must say I like the idea of just listening at the open filler cap to hear the pump going.

I will report back once I have got the pump replaced.

Hold off replacing the pump until you have checked out the transfer plumbing across the tank saddle. This is a well known problem with these cars at low fuel levels and on an incline.

Sounds like it might be the fuel pump...

I have just found this, which explains how to test the pump.

That link is for an 850 / V70 ph1 - different design.

It doesn't. - it's probably not working at all. There are two tanks joined by pipework. Each tank has a level sensor and the gauge displays the average of two readings. It is possible that the tank on the N/S could be 100% full while the one on the O/S where the pickup draws from is empty, but the gauge will show you have half a tank remaining and yet there is no diesel available to run the engine.

The pick up problem can be seen and diagnosed quickly with Vida as Vida shows the imbalance between the two fuel level sensors.

On taking the car to the garage it took a good few seconds for the pump to get enough fuel to the engine to turn

The problem is now fixed and it starts very quickly.

Total bill was £370 (£250 pump plus £90 labour). Apparently it took four pumps before the supplier could get one that fitted my car. Goodness knows what is happening there, as I have had a similar problem with a PS pump and them being supplied with a different flange.

Default 2002 V70 no fuel pressure. Fuel pump resistance test

Hello,
I seem to have the same problem but on a slighly later P2 V70 2002.
I have done all the above checks and believe I have a bad fuel pump.

My car has NO fuel pump control module and is fitted with a Bosch 0 580 313 115 in-tank pump.

The top of the pump has a 6-way plug with two thick wires and 3 thinner wires.
I assume that the thicker wires go to the pump motor and the resistance reading between them is 35 ohms - which seems very high.

Does anyone have a pin-out chart for this plug to explain what the connections are?

I have tried connectiong 12 volts directly to the two thicker wirs but the pump wont run. Is there another control inside the pump? Thanks, Alan

if they fitted just a non volvo pump in the original reservoir you may well have the same problem , The reservoir is supposed to stay full it holds about a litre or more, even if your tank was bone dry on a 45 degree hill it should start and get you about 5 miles at least … what was happening is the one way valve in the bottom of the reservoir is leaking fuel back into the tank , so if you are on a slope it is empty . You should have changed the whole unit like volvo recommend , .
