Rear heat shield replacement
Hi, has anyone replaced the rear heat shield on their XC60?
Mine appears to be held on by nothing and has developed a really annoying squeak. I can only assume its resting on the exhaust but its unlikely to fall off due to the size. It looks like the exhaust might need to be removed in order to replace?

Heatshields nearly always fail because of corrosion of the thin aluminium around the fixing point.
Usually easy to fix with a washer under the fixing. Search ebay for Penny Washer or Repair Washer - get stainless steel if you can.

The (galvanic) corrosion of the aluminium is caused by it being in (wet) contact with the integral steel washer of the fixing nut.
The neatest solution I've heard of, rather than using steel again, it to use the bottom of a soft drink or beer can as the washer. Fairly thick aluminium, coated, free. If any corrosion occurs it'll be the washer, not the heatshield. |
