I've just changed to a XC60 R-Design D5 with 20" wheels from an SE Lux Premium with 18" and the new car is so much nicer to drive.

The handling and steering response is so much better (for me as I prefer 'sharper' turn in), but this may be a lot to do with the suspension differences AND the larger diameter wheels. The car just feels so much more alive.

Tyre choice is also a factor in ride comfort too.

It will only be the rims that are a larger diameter not the tyres unless you are using non standard tyres. A standard SE LUX will have softer suspension. I have the 4C suspension on my SE LUX and for rough potholed roads like we have locally I prefer the Comfort setting which is similar to the standard SE LUX but on any other roads I prefer the Sport setting which is like the standard R-Design suspension.

I always use 17 rims on mine with 245/65/17 winter tyres summer and winter pumped up to eco settings.

To highlight the difference the suspension setting makes, crossing railway lines at 40 mph in Sport mode triggers an event on my dash cam's impact sensor, but in Comfort mode it doesn't.

You certain on that tyre size? That is not the spec for the car.

Just been running 20" wheels for a week now fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season tyres and I am delighted that I had this upgrade. There has been no real detriment to the ride quality. My wife says it feels the same as with the 18". The car just sits better and feels more planted on the road whilst driving and less pitchy, steering seems to be more acute and I think it looks a whole lot more pleasing

My 18"s are fine. Tyre noise isn't a issue.
