I would never run oil to 17k but that said let’s be frank, the oil treatment is not likely to do any harm so give it a go. I too would be keen to see how it turns out.../

The thing is, there are deals to be had too, currently hou can buy 20L of high quality Total quartz 9000 energy 0w30 for £100 delivered, thats 3 oil changes there!

Now, as you have (Ive seen yer signature since first post) a euro 4 with dpf, your service fill is (for the sake of conversation) 6l because of fuel dilution. You are spending £130 for 2 service and doing 34k. By the time 17k comes, a large proportion of your engine oil is diesel, as such its highly compromised.
If you were to buy the Total for example, for £100 you get 3 service (plus top up oil), change at 12k before theres too much dilution and other degradation, and travel 36k... So, £30 less, 2k more, healthier engine! Just ave a think about that....
No additive is going to overcome the dilution, and I suspect your clatter may be down to dilution...

.... which means that your engine is not being properly protected by the oil and is wearing out rapidly.
Do understand that these high-miles service intervals are designed for the new car user on a fleet doing lots of (motorway) driving. Fleets are only interested in costs, not longevity.
As Andy has said, its cheaper to change the oil more frequently and your engine will last like its supposed to.

Where can you get that oil from and is it suitable for the later 2012 model do you know, I would buy 40l and change every 6,000miles. I already change every 6k, I am sure it’s over the top but it helps me sleep at night lol!

What is your oil requirement? If its 0w30 A5/B5 it'll be ok (This is A3/B4 but saps are the same etc. its just the hths which is different but in a good way).
Found it here https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Total-Quart...pid=1008763357

Ill see if I can find some decent A5/B5 too for the more cautious who may not wish to differ...

Millers 0w30 A5/B5 20l for £133 https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-88211-m...ngine-oil.aspx

Thanks for that. Good price isn’t it. I find 6,000 mile intervals good.

Hang about, this is fully synthetic oil. I was on 5000 mile oil changes 35 years ago with mineral multigrade.,
While I agree 18,000 is too long surly fully synthetic should reach 10,000 mile intervals without problems unless a lot of stop start town driving is undertaken. Provided the car gets a couple of decent runs a month to keep the dpf clean then failed regeneration should not be a problem as the car only regenerates when the dpf is out of spec due to soot biuld up.

I find an annual oil change on my car that does between 10,000/12,000 good miles anualy has been fine and I am anal about oil changes, landrover gets 2 a year of semi synthetic a4b4 despite a max of 10,000 miles a year but it gets far more arduous use than the volvo, often waded through rivers and slow speed running.

Is there a reason you choose 6k as an interval?

Paul.

Exactly the same as me GVM, 12 month 10-12k doesn't waste the oil yet changes it before a steeper trend of degradation sets in.
In my wifes octavia on variable service which monitors the oil, you must change it immediately (so vag state) the car asks for it, every 16k near enough the oil has been changed throughout its life, which means that for vw507 long life oil in a pd at least, its officially dead at circa 16k.

my vw uses that oil in a 1.9pd, oil vw507, gets changed a lot shorter than 16k andI can feel the difference after about 9 or 10k. Perhaps I need more holidays for long runs
