Removing headlight wipers

My one headlight wiper motor & stalk are broken and I'm thinking of removing the entire headlight wiper motor/stalk arrangement on both sides and plugging the hole so there are a couple less things to break/worry about.

Has anyone else removed their headlight wipers for good ? I figure I can live without them as I've never had them on a car before.

What are your opinions ?

I've just reinstated mine with a pair of motors from a scrapped car. Until last week I would have agreed that they are not necessary, but after again cleaning all the mud off I noticed how bright the headlights are without a coating of muck on the lenses!
Remember to plug the washer pipe, or you will loose all your washer fluid on the road instead of over the windscreen.

If restoring them, make sure you fit the black plastic brackets on the arms. These keep the blades straight and stop them getting jammed under the lower edge of the glass. If that happens the motor burns out.

Check the wiring and particularly the earths before condemning the motors.

I would agree with Clifford - they are worth keeping. A few weeks ago I fuelled up after 200 miles daytime driving on the motorway and cleaned the thick layer of salt of the lights - it needed scraping off! I will be repairing mine as soon as it gets a bit warmer.
If you decide to do away with them there is a rubber blank available for the panel - standard for some markets.

I don't suppose you have a part number or know where to get hold of two of those rubber blanks Mike ?

I'm currently running with one unit off and one on. This is due to the one being knackered but it also gives me chance to ponder which "look" I prefer, with or without ;-)

I know about rubber blanks as both my French and Italian lhd cars don't have wipers. I don't have part number but if you get stuck I'll get it off our dealer. Motors need checking for good electrical supply and earth if these are ok best to use a good secondhand unit.

I took mine apart before condemning them. The plastic cover will snap off, revealing the gears and motor. The gear mechanism looked OK, but the motor was duff. It's a tiny thing about the size of the motor in a toy train, so perhaps it has a hard life.

I've gone for the style over content look, and binned mine. I'm not sure if they worked or not, but I still have a motor somewhere if anyone wants it. The holes will get welded up eventually, along with all the other trim holes! 75 I think......

If you are welding up holes do make sure that there is adequate rust protection to the back of the area - you don't want rust appearing around them.
