Default XC90 D5 - Engine ticking noise

On new MY2010 XC90 D5 Manual

Engine has faint ticking noise on acceleration. Can be heard at any speed when additional acceleration is applied ( e.g sat on m/way at 70 all is quiet -accelerate to 80 and ticking heard).

Is this normal / characteristic of the engine (injectors maybe ?) , or does it indicate something to follow up with dealer on ?

My MY04 D5 with 67k does the same. I haven't had the car long enough to be any kind of expert, but from experience of diesel engines in general, it sounds like a compression knock or valve gear (tappets in the old days!).

Perhaps others have more accurate information?

Thanks.

Charlie.

Hi CharlieG,

Where do you get your XC90 serviced - I am close by. Can't PM as I haven't reached 30 post yet!

Hi Sportwag,

The XC90 has been serviced by SMW in Belfast since new. As I have only owned the car a week or so, the pleasure of using SMW hasn't been experienced yet.

Just noticed that the power steering hose has a small leak and is ouzing some oil, so this will have to be repaired soon.

Thanks.

Charlie.

Our 53 D5 SE did that VERY noticeably... Just as you describe, the noise was appreciably louder when accelerating. I had put it down to a noisy hyd tappet or injector wear - which, with over 120k miles on her, would have been forgiveable... Last week I serviced the car (130k miles) I drained out the black canker and refilled with Mobil 1 (Turbo D, 0W-40). The ticking noise has now all but disappeared... I figure the previous service used pirate oil as well as pirate filters... Buggers!!
