Update:

OK so we've had the V70 for 2 weeks now, and only used it a couple of times for the weekly grocery shop. Yesterday was the first proper drive; a visit to my dad's. He and my dog needed a long walk in the woods, or else, they'd start chewing up the furniture

The hope was, the longer journey would get everything thoroughly warm, and the gearbox "thud" when engaging D would be a rare occurrence.

Unfortunately, the harsh engagement when selecting D was still happening. This does not happen when we first turn the engine on and select D. It's only on subsequent D's during the journey, and never on R. Coincidentally, my dad has a 2011 Volvo S60 (same year as the V70) with the same engine and gearbox (D3 and TF-80SC), and his gearbox does not do this.

We like the car very much, but it seems there is something inherently wrong (somewhere) in the gearbox. I've just emailed the second hand car dealership we bought it from, which (luckily) is local and should make this a little smoother. My hope is their "...1 month engine and gearbox warranty..." will cover, at the very least, the cost of a diagnosis, because the description of the car in their advert included the words "...Solid Engine and Gearbox..."

Although it may turn out that you have real mechanical damage to the box, it could be that trying to condition the adaptive software might fix the jolt. I had this problem with my 2012 XC70 and I was advised to find an empty space and with the engine running put the selector into D and drive forward a few feet and then put it into R and drive back the same distance and repeat this 20 or so times. Sounded like superstition but it actually worked for me. The box learned the changing sequence for pulling away both forwards and in reverse. Just driving the car does not do this and while it warms up the box, the Transmission Control Module does not get to have repeated input of the data it needs to alter the program.

I see you are fretting about the oil in the box and you may have every reason to do so but it cost nothing but minor embarrassment, if found driving backwards and forwards repeatedly, to carry out this simple procedure and others have confirmed it solved their jolt problem. I believe that you don't even have to allow the car to travel backwards and forwards but just engage the selector and feel the jolt and keep sequencing D to R and back to D for at least 20 cycles with the engine running and the foot brake applied but I can only report on what I personally did.

It certainly is worth a go with the trader although you may get the ‘but it’s working and not actually broken’ reply.

Keep us updated!

Update: we gave this ago today, and we stopped at the 15th time, there was no tangible improvement, the jolt was still there and quite aggressive, so much so my missus could see the car jerking, and you can hear it too! Also, I got her to do it while I had my head in the engine compartment, and you can see a lever moving, just underneath the airbox, and the engine jolts when it happens. Next step is to pop over to a Volvo dealership and hope I can have a word with a mechanic, and maybe even show him what I mean...

Sorry this didn't work for you as it did for me. Seems that it is entirely possible that you have a non-software problem that needs attention from a Volvo mechanic.

I would avoid Volvo mechs. I would go for gearbox specialist. But really, workshop only for gearboxes.

Agree - Horton Cars farm significant work out to a tame gearbox specialist and they know these boxes backwards, forwards & sideways.

Worth a conversation with Graham @ Horton before you decide your next steps

No worries, I appreciate the suggestion, worth trying the simple things first.

Yeah, doing a timing belt is one thing, but this is beyond me.

Interesting! So Horton mechanics do the standard work, and gearboxes are sent to a specialist workshop?
