If this car is a dual sensor car (upstream and downstream) then removing the cat element will result in a check engine light for the rest of its life and a 'O2 efficiency low' code when you scan it.
Getting past that is possible, but requires some trickery with either remapping or a MIL eliminator (O2 faker). IF the car in question is a single sensor setup then I'd also recommend DeathRider's idea of smashing out the element! Chris...

http://www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk/vo...-converter.php On my 850 right now. It's fine. The welding quality is OK, the steel seems all right, the element flows fine and my emissions are perfect. While it may not last as long as Volvo OEM, it cost a sh!t load less at just under £100 all in. Chris...

Just ordered one from PFV!! Very helpfull over the phone but it is the delay in getting anything that gets me: the car is sitting outside waiting for the new part and no one has one to hand, grrrrrrrr.

I ordered from cats direct on Tuesday and it was in my hands on Thursday morning.
Fortunately the car was still drivable, just noisy. Chris...

Funnily enough I had looked at the same site! Just to clarify the point that my cat has two sensors and as Chris has pointed out it would fail its next mot if I simply removed the innards as well as having the Lambda light showing. New cat should be with me thursday or friday at the latest and comes with a fitting kit. I will post back once fitted.

Chris, how did you seal the cat to exhaust joint, as no matter how many different types of clamp I try it constantly blows?? I think I am going to end up using some exhaust sealer on this joint as it below the cat.
The new part has a tiny cat compared to the original, I can understand why it is a lot cheaper than the Volvo part!!

Ah but cat technology has moved on, it may be just as efficient. Oh and yes, some sealing putty downwind if you like of the cat will be fine.
