Default "03" v70 d5 auto..."transmission service required"

Lumpy N to 1 st encouraged me to change 4 litres ATF , done 100 miles since and was about to change next 4 l when warning triangle lights up and " transmission service required" pops up.
Thinking I will now take it to a gearbox specialist, any ideas as to probable fault?
I used correct atf and it did seem to improve a little bit, levels were carefully checked too.????

My car's the same year/model as yours & I'v just fully flushed the oil from the gearbox & not a lot of improvement. Due to the cost of going any further with this car, I'm getting shot of the thing asap & will never touch another!

You'll find masses of info regarding these gearboxes on here & all over the internet. I sold a BMW 530d to buy this Volvo & regret doing so, as the BMW gave me 5 years service with no major headaches.

I think the fact your gearbox was shifting badly to start with May point to it having an issue then. What was the fluid like before you changed it ? What mileage has the car done, was it used for towing, or short trips like a taxi. If you look at volvo service data it does suggest that these boxes are not necessarily sealed for life and can be subject to fluid services. The other point is there is a software reset recommended following a fluid change to prevent fault messages from occurring afterwards. I'd get it hooked up to a Vida system and see what codes are up.

Hi pacman, it's only done 88k and has no tow bar nor taxi history, the 4 litres I dropped was a bit black but not too bad. I rang a gearbox specialist this morning who said all he could do was a full flush...so I'm looking for a volvo savvy specialist now, found one in queensferry and will ring them Monday. I quess it needs a full flush and computer analysis / upgrade, starting to think I might have to go to the volvo dealer?

I'd suggest you get the fault codes read or buy a code reader to find out why the message has appeared, this will cut out the guess work.

Here's a suggestion:

Have there been any other symptoms apart from the message?

Thanks Chris,
Once hot the neutral to drive shift seemed to be delayed and juddery, now and again with a jolt...when cold all was well, so I changed the first of three 4 litre atf...well I don't want to waste money on another two oil changes if it's something else...bit complicated these gearboxes lol!

Given the car has only 88k and not used for towing then the odds are the box can be salvaged.

I get the impression the only problem is a judder/bump into drive, does the box behave OK after this?

Getting the codes read will help to determine which way to proceed.

Hi Chris,
She is fine through all the gears, pulls like a train and as smooth as silk. Holding the car on the brake in drive often causes a jump on take off too...but only when hot...sounds like something of nothing to me...but I will get the codes done and a specialist look at it. Starting to regret buying it!

Just sold mine this week, so relieved that it's gone & no longer my worry! I'd never entertain the thought of another Volvo, just over-rated rubbish.
