Default Do you use the Active highbeam light function

Hi all

First time Volvo owner, love most things about the XC40 I have but the Active highbeam assist seems a bit flakey.

On an unlit back country road it works really well unless you have oncoming cars at just the right interval for the corners of the road so your lights dip for a car then come back on for a second or so then go off again for the next car sort of looks like you are flashing your lights at them.

Also in town we have some dark ish 40mph streets with roundabouts and the lights will be going on and off.
I perhaps shouldn't care what other people in cars think.
I have tried fast and medium settings so far will try slow.

I use it regularly when on B-roads, I keep it on fast, based on my experience with a previous volvo. Can’t say that I found them flakey, quite the opposite. I was never flashed by others for blinding them.

I can understand why it would look like, from the drivers position, that you are flashing other drivers.

But from the oncoming traffic perspective, it won’t appear like that as the beam isn’t being directed at them…

I certainly leave it on. I find it excellent 👍

Nothing flaky about mine. I leave them on all the time. They’re a great feature on unlit roads.

thanks for all the replies.

I think you are all correct, I would just anticipate a car coming round a corner sooner and kill the main beam where it takes a little longer.

Overall it is a great function and i should just trust it as 99% of the time it is perfect.

I love driving this car, its only the T3 and I couldn't stretch to one with the 360 cam and ACC but it is such a nice car to cover miles in.

I use mine most of the time and do not have any issues with them, but often switch the function off when driving on very twisty or undulating roads, as they will often, as others have said, change rapidly and confusion or annoy other drivers.
I once had a very near miss when approaching a junction, where there is a dip in the road very close to where a side road joins the main road; as I was approaching, I drove into the dip, my headlights changed to main beam, then immediately dipped again as I came out of it. A car waiting at the junction pulled out right in front of me, as the driver thought I had flashed him out - it was a very near thing!

Lately I’ve left this function on since the start of winter. I live in an area with unlit roads so find this really useful. I’m amazed by the technology and so far have had no issues. Excellent driving aid as I can concentrate on driving and not worry about blinding oncoming drivers.
