Another fellow Irish member I see.
The difference between a 700 and 900 series is not very much. With the exception of a few cosmetic changes, the only major difference I can think of is the higher back on the 900 series saloon, with greater boot space. The estates should be relatively the same in dimensions. I think most of the engines are the same as well, with the only difference being the six cylinder models. |

The 940 I think is carrying a few extra pounds so will be slower than the 740. The auto box in the 7 series had the reputation of being quite fast so the difference will probably be noticeable. The 7 won't have hydraulic tappets and may not have intercooler. I'm sure there are other differences that I cannot recall but will be found buried in the archives.
Having heard that the 7's are reasonably nippy I would like to try one someday, but if I had the choice of buying I would just go for the car which had been better looked after. jor Last edited by jor; Jul 19th, 2009 at 03:01. |

Hi Volvo BM,
My 940 with it's D24T could best be described as 'adequate', it's certainly no roadburner. Having said that, I've always founds autos to be a little deceiving with regards to speed. My old D24T that I've just pulled out after 180,000 miles was tired and smoky. So I've put into a D24T from a 740, so I'll let you know. Good luck finding a 940 D24, I couldn't find one in Ireland. I had to go to the UK for my Ebay 'special'. At £500, I was really chuffed. It's scabby around the edges, but it runs well! Jor, thanks for the tip about the lack of hydraulic tappets. I'm hopefully going to try firing it up later on, so I'm glad I know rather than maybe getting all despondant in case it rattles badly. Cheers, Rich another Irish member....
