440 2.0i prob, plese help me
Hi there i hope some one can help me.
I have a volvo 440 2.0i as my run about car 1994. I have a prob with the engine, 2 days ago if i was in 1st or 2nd gear ( or any gear ) around the 1500 - 2500 rpm mark the car would start to kangaroo while driving out of the blue and after 1 - 2 - 3 min it would go back to being ok, even when you put your foot to the floor it would just make the kangaroo get worse then all of a sudden it would spring back to life, it will even do it with the idleing, it will sit around 850rpm then dip to 400 rpm then back up. So saturday i replaced the below: Dis cap Rotor arm Ht leads Plugs Air filter Took it out for a run and even though the car runs better the prob is still there, you can drive it for 1 houre and it will be fine , then out of the blue it will play up again. so my next thinking was fuel filter as this had never been done, i changed it over for a new one and the stuff that came out of the filter i could not belive it, it was pure black, but again this has not done any thing? The only 1 time i had this prob is once i went though a large puddle and the engine would kangaroo for 1 - 2 min then stalled, left it for about 2 houres and its been fine since, as its snowing bad here could water/ice or snow be causing this, do the 440's suffer with this. Could you please help as this seems to be getting wores Ryan. |

The first I would do is run the self diagnostic test from the black box under your bonnet to see if it throws up any faults. Sounds like a sensor is playing up. Especially if it can get wet. Have you checked and cleaned the maf sensor in the airfilter tube that goes into the throttle body?

This link will show you how its done. Fairly straight forward.
Socket 2 may hold your answer. http://www.am.torun.pl/%7Eja/volvo/d...c-system.shtml Failing this perhaps check the gear oil? Last edited by carl4u44; Jan 10th, 2010 at 22:39. |

2-2-3 Idle speed regulating valve: no signal or signal faulty
I think this is the idle control valve. Its at the front of your engine and has 2 black air pipes going into it. You can replace this or take it off and clean it out as they get caked up with carbon and crap.. Check for obvious signs such as is it plugged in, connected ok? The valve is kind of exposed at the front and may get wet. If you look at them on ebay it will give you a better picture of it. Dont forget to reset the faults either by disconnecting the batt or holding down the test button in socket two as described in that link. Is that all the faults comming up? Hi carl, thats what i thought the ICV unit, but this should only cause the idle to be funney, this would not cause the car to be jurkey while driving would it mate?
I think thats all the error i get? I did clean it saturday would this logged the code by doing that? Ryan. Last edited by cpu_man; Jan 10th, 2010 at 23:58. |

You might have dislodged some of that 'black stuff' from the old filter and it may have made its way to the fuel rail. Disconnect the battery for an hour or so to reset the ECU, reconnect it, and take the car for good run and keep the revs high - hard to do in this weather. It's refered to as the "Italian tune up". Do another check for fault codes after the run.
Did you check the rubber bellows from the air filter housing to throttle housing for any cracks? Try cleaning the butterfly valve too while you have the bellows off. Process of elimination...
