Default help...my S80 D5 is smoking !!!!

ok, real novice here (company car owner from age 19 to 50 so a mechanical no-hoper)

the above vehicle is emitting smoke (diesel pluming ???) of varying levels under power but in other respects seems to be running ok. I have noticed a particular hesitation (like a misfire??) when cruising at pretty much precisely 1500rpm yet the car pulls away from this promptly when u apply the power. I do not have any starting problems and my S80 is returning excellent mpg (50mpg at 75 mph) on a mixed cruising run to southampton yesterday got 60.2mpg.
i have no idea what to look for and dont want to get the runaround from a garage who spots a no-hoper like me.
I would appreciate the tips on what to look for initially before i head down the injector road (this much i know about the D5 engine-hope for me yet huh!!!!!)

I would bet that one of your large diameter charge hoses is split. Have a look at all your large hoses to and from the intercooler.
