Airbag Warning Light.

My 2004 V40 Airbag light has just started to come on.

As widely suggested the first thing I did was to check the wires under the seat, as these are the most common faults. Regrettably this has not resolved the problem.

The next step was to identify and clear the diagnostic codes (thank you very much davebb) hoping they would not return. Unfortunately this hasn’t worked either.

The fault codes were 017C, 017D and 0001 are exactly those Gatos identified for mobym back in January 2015 under ‘Airbag Fault Codes’. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=222132

The first code suggests there is a problem with the wire between the central locking unit and the control module. I’ll need to find where is this central locking unit although this unit works and has never otherwise posed a problem.

The second indicates a fault between the seat belt reminder (presumably the blinking light at the top of the windscreen) and the control module although again this reminder unit works and has always to my knowledge functioned correctly.

The third code however appears to be the most critical as it seems no other trouble codes can be removed until this one has been cleared. So obviously this one needs to be done first and this maybe accounts for why the other two did not clear.

My first step will be to remove the central panel to access the control unit, unfortunately the pictures have gone from Gatos Guide (what would we do without him?) but may not be too difficult to figure out. I’ll start by cleaning all the contacts; the problem may be as simple as that. Failing that it appears the module will need replacing. Would anybody know whether this module is common to any other years or is a used one likely to need to come from a 2003/4 S40/V40 in case I do need to get one?

The problem is the SRS-0001 code, which means that the SRS module is faulty. So you will need another module. Now, with regards to the other codes, they should go away when you do another reset. Problem is that when the SRS0001 code is present, you will not be able to reset the other codes either until you replace the module.

By the way, I hope you saw the other thread by Davebb https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=278485 with regards to not being able to read your car and also about the module. You will need a replacement module as you are getting the dreaded Srs0001 error code which means "faulty module"

So the next step is to remove the centre panel in order to determine the part number of the control unit fitted as it appears there were more than one.

Then to obtain and fit a replacement. Hopefully with a replacement unit the other two error codes will disappear.

It is likely to be more than a week before I’m able to do all this. I’ll then give an update of the status.

It takes less than 5 minutes to remove the centre console and you will be able to see the part number

Thanks Dave, I hadn’t forgotten.

I only fixed the car yesterday and this is the first opportunity I’ve had to report back to the forum.

I’ve been very fortunate in that Gatos was not only able to identify the cause of the problem from your diagnostic codes but was also able to supply me with a good used replacement control unit. I fitted it yesterday and the airbag light now extinguishes just as it should.

So my problem has been fixed, entirely due to the help I’ve received from this Forum.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but the airbag warning light on my wife's 2004 V40 Sport has come on today. She bought the car new and it has just done 50K miles. She will probably take it to the independent who does all our servicing (I have a XC70). My main concern is that this is just an electrical fault and that the airbags will not be activated. Thanks in advance.
