also found bills for s/f front pad set in nov 14 with 63,000 on clock, then nov 15 for rear pad set with 69,000 on clock.in june 2011 handbrake problem, "rear inspection shoes brakes discs drums, surface corrosion to drums, found cables adrift at linking, strip and refit, adjusted, may have some noise due to corrosion." wow,i'm worried now.

I couldn't have put it better myself ,
The above car will require new VOLVO shoes and new discs, It will then need bedding in by driving with it half on for 100 years , let it cool then re adjust ,,,,

The owner above can't have used it at all if he took it for MOT with a poor handbrake . That is the killer not using it ! It allows the disc surface to corroded inside where the shoes are ...

Since purchasing in Aug 17 I used handbrake as you should with any car.i have never noticed an issue.i release and put into drive.when parked I apply handbrake. It does look very rusty on calipers and back plate.i am sorry as I am a novice but love my car.

get it adjusted up a bit it should go to 3 clicks to grip if it goes past that the leverage is not enough . That is the first thing to try , if no good drive for a short distance with the parking brake on , it may clean up the inside of the disc enough to work better , you will have to adjust it up more after that .

Because the factory set up is fundamentally a flawed design where the clearance between the shoes and the drum (which will be fractions of a millimeter) is maintained by tension in a 10 foot + long cable which could be 15 years old now and stretched, sticky and stiff. The more elegant design is that the in-drum adjusters maintain the clearance at rest and the cable is used for actuation only.

I am aware that this is not the Volvo prescribed method for the XC90 but as a general engineering solution it is far more elegant, robust, resilient and logical.
