Saying that, a new C4 Cactus is £150/year, so still 50% of what my XC70 costs.

However, that jump from band K to L is a hell of step for you C70 auto guys!
Meh, a mere bagatelle

If it wasn't £500+ squids tax I'd have paid much more for my example. Mr swing, meet Mrs roundabout.

Ive noticed on the window switches that I have a button that drops all the windows, so Im assuming the up switch is for all the windows to go up yes ? Well the down button works, but the up button doesnt. When I press up I can hear the door locks flicker and the little red led flash ? So Im wondering if that issue is preventing the roof, as a safe mech.

Thoughts ?
Good point on the windows. According to the system operation doc. the Passenger Door Module (PDM), Driver Door Module (DDM), Left Rear Door Module (LDM) and Right Rear Door Module (RDM) receive a message from Convertible Roof Module (CRM) via CAN and LIN in order to initiate the 'window drop' function during roof operation, so maybe this prevents the roof coming up as it doesn't know where the windows are positioned.

I think you are right. The £500/year tax cars must suffer a hit in value, but great for buyers.

My mate has an S80 V8, and he doesn't worry about the tax when he's filling up daily!!

Well, I put the code scanner on. Seems there was no connection to my pump, removed the covers, pump is all rusty and clearly someone has been here before.

However.... Now Ive got a bigger issue....

When I then tried another go on the roof, put my key in the ignition and noticed the dashboard didnt light up apart from the orange engine light, and the wipers are on, all the time. Car wont start now. Remote fobs dont work, literally nothing works !! :-(

Has anyone had this before ? Car is completely dead, windows dont go up, nothing works apart from a flashing amber engine light and the wipers ??

Ive got a feel Ive blown the ecu. Where is the ECU located ? i suppose there are many so which ones are in the engine bay or foot wells ?

looking in the boot someone has been in here before. cable ties, clips missing, the rear lock cover has broken clips, so diffinately sins of the past here. The motor on the pump looks rusty, the foam around it is soaked so there's been a leak and I reckon the motor is frozen. I will try to remove it and test it with a 12v feed.

However, the roof is the least of my worries as the car is dead ! :-(

Any suggestions ? Anyone encountered this ? If the imobiliser is on would it cause this ? I would of thought that you still could switch the ignition on but when I put it on ignII nothing lights up.

Remember when I said how this car will be either a win or fail, starting to think fail lol

I have no advice re the repair, but I think that recovery to the specialist who can diagnose for £68 seems a very good deal in the light of your post.

I'd start there, and also even at this early stage, based on the report, have in mind the option to break the car to recover your money.

Not intended to be pessimistic, but the time to get out of a project is sometimes before you get in, iyswim.

Hi Bonefish, thanks for replying.

Well, as this thread is turning into an ownership experience I will keep regular updates for future owners that have the same issue.

Car back up and running Been doing some research about the CEM. Seems this litle devil gets all wet and needs a clean, circuit board level. So this morning I started to remove the battery and noticed that one of the connectors to positive was loose. I cleaned up all the connectors and reseated and boom the car came back to life. What confuses you is that you see wipers working and assume the battery is okay however there are a number of positive cables which feed different modules so if one of these isnt getting power then you get the issue I had.

So, if anyone else has this issue, car is dead but wipers are constantly going, ecu light is flashing, then check battery connectors for dirt and a clean connection. I was about to disconnect battery and remove the CEM, which looks an easy job, and this lead me to see the battary issue :-)

So, shes back up and running. Had tons of fault codes which Ive cleared. Just the roof, airbag and air quality sensor, which is in the front wheel well, to do.

Ive removed all the rear boot panels now, all dirty and mouldy and have pressure washed them, with the mats. THey are all drying now . Im going to check the connections from the CRM to the pump first. Been searching on ebay and pumps are 80-100. definately worth a play to see if I can get my old pump working first.

I will then be removing drivers door panel and checking connections on curtain air bay to see if I can sort this too. REading up either the door jam connector plays up or connection behind the door.

I will then get onto engine work. I plan to flush the gearbox, will do a little research on the fault I have, clunking when hot. It doesnt do it cold so Im hoping either low / crap fluid, or a sneak valve. I had a gearbox company nearby and for 120 they will flush and filter it.

Ive ordered new batts for the remote controls as niether now work. I wonder if I need to re-sync codes ? More research lol

Hi All,

Thought I would give you all a little update on my C70 adventures. :-)

Spent the weekend fixing things, cleaning it up, etc :

Gearbox -
Booked the car in for a full gearbox flush in 2 weeks time. roughly about 12 litres should rinse it through. I checked the oillevel via the dip stick on the gearbox. Firstly I tried to get to it from the top, no chance. So I jacked the car up (Jesus this car is low) and you can lay under the front as its easiler to get to it. Best remove the tray too. The oil level was low, very dark / black. By chance I had some toyota IV oil (from my old Mkiv supra tt days) so put a litre in. I reckon it changes better now so the flush will do it good. Spoke to the gearbox expert and he reckons it could be the start of valve body issues but the flush will help / prevent it getting worse.

Airbag / Curtain airbag -
This one is a pain. Reading up on this code "SRS 0055 high resistance on curtain air bag". So Ive now cleaned all connectors in the loom, door plug , airbag connector and removed the drivers door panel to test. If I disconnect the door plug then I get 2 SRS errors, only one when plugged back. Ive also checked the loom as best I could to the SRS. Ive ordered a blankin resistor to block out / by pass the airbag, see if that works. If it does then I know the airbag is failed and will get another one. So this is a work in progress.

Non Working window switches -
I removed my driver's window switches as my `all down / all up` wasnt working. Ebay wanted 50 quid, so I literally just sprayed tons of contact cleaner in the gaps and that has worked a treat. So all window switches work a treat.

Flithy Inside -
Ive ripped out all the interior and washed carpets, seats, trims, etc. Ive high pressure washed all carpets, trim panels from the boot and they have all come up like new. The previous owner was a slob, pure and simple. I realise everyone has a certain level of clean however this car was a pig hole. Ive now washed inside 2 times and its now returning to looking new. The colour of the water in my bucket was terrible. I can now sit in it without feeling sick.

Gear Shifter dust cover -
Mine literally started to break up in pieces. I noticed it when I first sat in the car that the cover had a missing part and you could see down the selector hole. Its little things like this that bother me. So Ive removed the water fall console, removed the gear selector and top of shifter to get to the gear selector dust cover. This so annoys me and Ive just ordered one from China for £10. 2 weeks delivery. ;-( However, whilst there Ive hoovered even more mess and drips of food etc up from around the selector.

Roof -
Awww, the old roof. Ok so i did some testing and I am 90% sure the motor on my pump has gone. I did a bit of haggling and got myself a replacement pump, complete with loom, valve body and cover for 160. I reckon I just need a motor but having all that means I have a replacement loom in the event that its that which is the cause. The error I get is CRM can not communicate to pump, something like that. So will install once I get it. I need some more hydro oil and this replacement pump does have oil so will reuse some of that. Fingers crossed :-)

Im looking forward to lowering the the roof as I want to clean the panels, lube up the seals etc. Ive now cleaned all the drain holes. Everyone was full of cr4p. I also want to somehow remove the inside roof lining as mine is awfully dirty, road film, etc. Once everything on the roof is working I will replace all bolts, install pump and re-fit trims.

Gave it a wax too, only a quick first one just to remove the first layer of rubbish. Its had some pain, even got some filler around the rear arch, what do you expect from an eldery owner. Still comes up nice. Once all mechnical bits are done I will then spend a day waxing it, then touching up chips, etc.

I also plan to service it. I reckon there is a slight mis fire so I plan to replace plugs, all filters and go from there. I cleaned the engine up using TFR. Great stuff, pwoerful but not as nasty as alloy wheel cleaner.

Funnily my brother is now keen to have the car so Im not sure im going to keep it once Ive restored it, I will see. Im half tempted to sell it to him, then get myself a more mint, low mileage D5 Se lux, 09/10 year in silver / silver. Or a facelift version D4.

Having this one has made me realise what a great car these are so will definately have another one, albeit in diesel.

Who knows, will wait and see. :-)

Just wanted to say a quick thank you to everyone for thier help. Ive actually now sold the C70 T5 as I got an offer I couldnt refuse :-)

I replaced the roof pump but then discovered that the two top roof rams were broken, probably broken when the roof was closed manually without releasing the piston on the pump.

I also just couldnt fix the damn airbag light. Ive must of had the interior out 3 times, console, both door cards off and still couldnt fix that `high resistance` error. I traced the wires back from the door to the ABS module and both airbag wires seem to be joined together, same as the working door. I just dont get it so left it.

So I ended up selling it today, i'ts gone to its new owner. It covered my costs and a bit more so Im happy. What is has done has taught me about the roof, how it works, the sensors, how to raise it manually, how the interior is bolted together.

ITs such a stunning car so Im now going to keep an eye out for a low mileage C70 D5. Has to be in silver / silver interior. Or a C70 D4. :-) I want a more mint version as the one I had just had to many sins from previous owners.
