Question Wheels falling apart?!?!?!

A few months ago I noticed that I was experiencing vibration upon heavy breaking. I had hit a kerb trying to avoid an oncoming car and assumed that my tracking was knocked out of alignment.

However when I took my car for new tyres and asked them to check the tracking it turned out the problem was that both front wheels were severely buckled.
Strangely they were buckled on the inside so this couldn't have been caused by the kerb and can only be down to pot holes.

I don't recall hitting any major pot holes ever in the car so was pretty shocked by this. The guy at the tyre place reckoned it was common with these wheels as they were very soft.

I was just about able to get them balanced and put them on the back until I could decide the best way to replace them.

However now approximately three months later I have discovered one of them has a serrated crack across the width of one of the spokes.

I'm hoping someone out there can give a little advice on the following:

1. Is it worth buying two new wheels from volvo or are they known to be prone to damage?

2. Is it worth buying non volvo replica wheels or are these even worse?

3. Is it worth changing all four wheels to another type? (volvo / non volvo)

4. What are my chances of finding a pair of these babies at a breakers yard and how much would be reasonable to pay?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Milton.

Unhappy Drawn a blank

I tried Salvo but they couldn't help.

I then tried every other specialist Volvo breaker I could but they all replied to say they couldn't help.

I then tried all the independent Volvo parts companies I could find on the net but they all replied to say they couldn't help!

In a bit of a panic by now (cos the hairline crack in one alloy is getting bigger) I contacted my local Volvo dealer to see what extortionate price they would charge me for two new 17" sculptor alloys and they said they'd get back to me.
They haven't got back to me and I'm going to have to chase them but interestingly I found several US companies selling these wheels new for between $180 and $300.
Unfortunately the only company who will ship to the UK are the one charging $300 and they want $100 each wheel for shipping.
That's $800 (£400) for two wheels which could still end up being a lot cheaper than buying them from Volvo UK!

Then again I could alternatively buy four new aftermarket alloys for only £280.
Admittedly the car won't be standard any more but perhaps the wheels may be less prone to damage?

Does anyone know anything about BK racing wheels?
Or does anyone have any reccommended manufacturers?

If I were you I'd stay as original as possible.

Check this:

And this:

Good luck...

Thumbs up

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately the two damaged wheels are beyond repair so a part exchange is out of the question.

I have been looking on ebay regularly for a set of wheels from an S40 or V50 but not a lot comes up.

Do you know what model those 17" linked to above are from? I don't recognise them.

Regards

I believe those 17" are off a '04 - '05 plate S40/V50. My friend has a '05 2.0L Diesel SE and these wheels are on his car. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLVO-17-ALLOY...d=p3286.c0.m14

Just to let you know I eventually bought a set of aftermarket wheels for £280 brand new. Admittedly they may affect the value of the car when I come to sell it but at least I know they are new and dent free and the crack in the old wheel was getting worse so I couldn't afford to wait.

The aftermarket wheels are pretty tame and look ok.

I guess I'll be putting the two good original wheels on ebay myself soon to try and get back some of the money spent.

Many thanks for all your suggestions.
