It failed before I got the jack stand underneath it. But yes, I completely agree.

Out of interest, where are the trolley jacking points for a 2017 (old model) XC60. Both our Mercs have jacking points with rubber pads but I can't see anything similar on an XC60. Will need to put winter wheels and tyres on when we venture to Alps next year.

There are fairly obvious gaps in the plastic sill covers where the thicker seam shows, but use a jack pad to transfer load to the body there if you use a trolley jack (I use an ice hockey puck with a slot cut/chiselled out that cost me £3.50 on eBay). Alternatively, use the large bolt area at the rear of the front suspension.

This is the one I use and it's great, low profile and fast lift. https://www.sgs-engineering.com/tja2...m-trolley-jack

I had 3 of the cheapo 2 ton jacks from Screwfix etc and all of them leaked oil so this time I spent a bit more money and got a good one that'll last.

Had a good look at the jacking points and jack supplied with Volvo spare wheel kit. I'd only use the jack if I had a puncture by the side of the road but to me it does appear that it does jack directly onto to seem. The slot in the jack doesn't spread the load on any other points. Seems a bit iffy to me compared to the rubber jacking points on mercs.

The ice hocky pucks will do a similar job I guess but what's stopping the seem cutting through the puck. I think you almost want a circular metal plate to sit on the jack with a metal channel welded to the top.

The slot is cut just deeper than the seam. The body either side of the seam sits on either side of the puck and load is spread evenly onto the rubber area.

There is no bodywork either side of the seam for the rubber to sit on. On the inside edge of the seam you probably have to go up another 50-60mm before you hit body. On the outer edge, if you go up 20mm or so you are onto the plastic sill which you would crack. There's clearly a void under this which I guess goes up to the body. You would need a rubber pad with a 50-60mm slot if you were going to contact body and even then the plastic sill on the outer edge would be a problem. Looking at the spare wheel jack it would appear you are jacking directly onto the seam. Very bizarre!

It doesn’t appear so on my XC60. There is a fairly large diameter cutout in the plastic sill and it touches the body nicely.

I'm also in the market for a new and decent trolley jack right now. I'd considered the SGS but having read their blurb, wondered if they actually manufactured the jacks themselves.......

Well my own view is that it’s an extremely solid bit of kit with thick sections, solid connections and a weighty casting at the handle root. I design bridges for a living and tend to design for the more ‘robust’ situations, so being impressed with a car jack doesn’t come lightly.
