Default Is this the axle bolt

Hi folks, i need to check the axle bolt, having looked up on google as to which bolt(s) it actually is, i came across this video, is this what i need to look for? also this video is showing a similar mod for the original bolt

Basically once the cars warmed up a bit, when i let off the throttle or put it on, i get a clunk, so ive been told to check the axle bolts, i think thats what was said, so i just need to make sure its not lose?

Yes that’s the axle bolt. You need to be very careful not to over tighten them as they are stretch bolts and if they break they are difficult to remove

Default Careful!

They are a one-time use bolt only.....strictly speaking you shouldn't reuse them. If you are careful you might be ok but you don't know how many times they may have been tightened before you got the car....There are several standards ie the old ones with a big metal washer and the later ones with a fat rubber bush to damp down axle ping or clunk. Do a search on google and invariably it will bring you back to this site - the search on here has gone t!ts up....For info, I changed to the later standard probably 70k miles ago and have been faultless.

Nobby

In the 2nd video where he was rolling the car a little, was that in gear or out of?

The torque setting for the bolts is 50nm (others say 35nm +120 degrees but I guess this ends up about the same), it's very important to also put thread lock on them.

The bolts with the rubber cone aren't available in the UK any more but you can still get them from overseas suppliers: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Edited to add: The torque settings above are for the rubber cone type bolts. Apparently the reason that Volvo themselves discontinued these is that if you drive through deep water you can get water trapped behind the rubber cone inside the hub which rusts the end of the driveshaft. I'd say as long as you're aware of this (and avoid doing it) they are fine.

"...was that in gear or out of?"

That'd be in gear Bashy. Many report noticeably loose axle bolts thus a plain hearty turn with the old 15mm could reveal slack and point to your remedy.

As mentioned above, do get new ones before applying full tightening torque.

I drive through the odd flood so i have opted for 2 new bolts, i spose i should have checked them 1st, i forgot to do i yesterday when i was working on the car, removing the blooming top mount took a lot longer than it should have done, and dropping the ratchet on the the lower engine cover didnt help the speed of things either lol It looks like they come with loctite on them so hope thats enough as i do not possess any...

Nobby if you don't mind me asking, where did you source the bolts with the rubber bush? I have seen some for sale in the USA but the shipping price was a bit salty. Thanks.
